In 1932, the contract for the IND Fulton tunnel segment between Lewis Ave and Rockaway Ave was held up for a year, for lack of money. The original opening for the line to Rockaway Ave had been late 1934 or early 1935. The next IND project, the 6th Ave tunnels, might not have been started in 1936, as well. Perhaps the 6th Ave el, second in ridership only to the 3rd Ave el, might have stayed up longer.
