After buying out the Manhattan Elevated Ry, the IRT, and the BMT, the City ran out of money. Then came the costs of demolition. Properties along the former routes had their property tax rates increased. Just take a look at the staggered demolition dates for the older els, too. To appease some critics of Unification, La Guardia kept the fare at an artificial five cents. I could go on, but you hopefully get my point! |
