Sometimes I wonder why the A is often thought of as the "flagship" train. Consider: it doesn't extend to the Bronx, does much of its Manhattan run along traditionally unglamorous 8th Avenue, just skirts the edges of the financial district, and in Brooklyn mostly goes through working-class areas. Sure, there are many connections, but that doesn't seem enough for the line's high status, and while the Rockaway run certainly is interesting it wasn't an original part.
