Then came the experimental R11, and they fucked up totally with the R16.

I think they first contemplated putting the R16 on a Brighton-Broadway service. Notice that right after Christie, they all could display "Brighton Beach" on their south roll sign, but not 95th Street, and once in RR service, had "Astoria' on the north roll sign, but cardboard for the south.
