Unfortunately we cannot turn back time and we must go forward. I am not too keen on having the subway tracks on either of the East River bridges as they would be a very tempting target for someone with a terrorist mindset - any ideas on how to replace those lines with underground / underwater tunnels ? Same thing for elevated lines - some of which are more than a century in age. How do we render them safer by relocating them underground with up to date amenities ? I know that this costs a lot, but safety is a desirable thing for all of us.
