This "feature" may apply to the MTA fare payment app as well. At the Transit Museum event last year about fare collection, the head of fare collection discussed not only the MetroCard implementation but the tap card/app development. I asked whether one would need to open and log into the app each time to use it--which could be a problem with a memory or multitasking challenged (i.e.: old) smartphone; I'd recently had difficulty getting a TicketMaster ticket to load on my phone--he said that it would be running in the background whenever the phone is on and would work without loading the app with each use. I did not ask whether one would have to open the phone though quite possibly that would not be necessary, leading to the same vulnerability. He did think that, given my concerns about app and phone reliability, I may be better off using the smartcard. |
