The MTA eTix app already exists for electronic ticketing on the railroads and could be adapted for use in the new system the same way Google Pay and Apple Pay will work, by linking to an OMNY account to pay fares without having to buy an ONLY card or use a compatible smart debit or credit card. It makes sense. Whether they will do it or not, I don't know, but Putre told us that the new system will take payments via a new MTA smart card (since named the ONNY card), compatible credit and debit cards, or an app. I don't recall him even mentioning general e-payment systems like Google or Apple, though he might have. It's true that the pilot program does not use an app, but it doesn't use the OMNY card yet either. |
