Re: A cool OMNY feature

I don't think it will use a camera or a barcode scanner for the app. It will operate on the same Near Field Communication signal from the phone as Google Pay and Apple Pay. I asked Putre about this because I had recently had difficulty pulling up a Ticketmaster ticket on my phone to be scanned to get into a ballgame. He said that the fare payment app, once installed and the account set up, would be running in the background and would not have to be opened, let alone scanned, to work. That circles back to the beginning of this thread and the issue of stolen phones. If you don't have to unlock your screen with your password/PIN/pattern/fingerprint, let alone open the app and possible, a stolen phone will allow the thief to use the account without having to unlock the screen until the phone is reported stolen and the account suspended. I have the additional concern that the MTA app running in the background (along with a bunch of other apps that are designed to run in the background even though they are needed only occasionally) will take up some memory and use some battery life. Perhaps the camera on the OMNY reader will allow for the current single-ride paper magnetic strip MetroCard to be replaced by a single ride cardboard OMNY card with a barcode or a QR code, though I have heard not heard anything about such a payment method.
