Proposed LIRR Terminal on Third Avenue

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Wed Jun 13 17:30:26 2018

A few days ago there was some discussion about the proposed LIRR Terminal on Third Avenue. It took me a while but I was able to locate a description of it.

Description of the Proposed LIRR East Side Terminal
The LIRR will eventually serve Grand Central Terminal. Trains will access Manhattan via the lower level tracks of the 63rd Street Tunnel.
Back in 1968 it was proposed to build a separate terminal for the Long Island Rail Road on the East Side of Manhattan. The platforms would have been located on Third Avenue between 48th and 52nd Street. The line itself would extend to 42nd Street.
This is a brief description. The line would cross the East River and then turn south onto Third Avenue. At 59th Street it would split into an upper and lower level each with two tracks. About 53rd Street each level would widen to four tracks and each level would have two island platforms. South of the platforms the line would again widen to six tracks and extend to 42nd Street.
A trackmap drawn by Mr. Jeffrey Erlitz appears in the January 1983 New York Division Bulletin
