When I lived in Woodhaven in the early 80s, the local politicos wanted the EL ripped down to Crescent St. With the unreliable service (no Z train then) and graffiti covered R-16s & R-30s, and an occasional R-42, the line there was thought of as symbol of crime & blight. Blight being from the structure itself in serious need of a paint job. Thankfully local politicians were unsuccessful. The MTA turned it around. Service improved, shiny new cars, Z train lives,Archer Ave connection completed, ridership went up & the El got its paint job.See, got a problem? Just throw $$$ at it & presto, problem solved. Its the New York way. |
