In other situations (the SAS excepted) a subway that was intended to replace an el was in place before the el was demolished. The extension of the A Line to Lefferts is a good example of that. Instead of setting up the connection from the Jamaica el structure to be hooked up while the el was still in operation, the planners decided to get fancy and design the connection so that it couldn’t be built unless and until the existing structure was completely removed. |
