I would say that the final blow to the area was the economic stagnation under Jimmy Carter, in the late 1970's. One more thing, it took a LONG time to build that Archer Ave subway, which primarily benefits commuters on the LIRR. Elkeeper: They ran the same load of malarkey in The Bronx when they wanted to tear down the Third Avenue El. Somehow, we were told that the removal of the el would usher in a "Golden Age" on Third Avenue. Of course what happened was exactly the opposite. The south Bronx only got worse, not better.
