The electrification of the peninsula rail route has been under discussions in the region for at least 30 years. Is it necessary? No; other passenger railroads, such as the Burlington Northern Santa Fe route between Chicago and Aurora has long operated successfully with very close passenger station spacings. And I suspect that electrification of New York area diesel railroads would yield a higher return on investment than San Francisco. This is a project designed only to consume federal funds because they are available, not a project that will fail in the absence of such funds. The project would not be pursued, absent federal funding, with local funds. |
