Tuscarora Almanac - April 12, 1968 - The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of operation of the NX Broadway-Sea Beach-Brighton Express which ran non-stop over the express tracks of the Sea Beach Line between 59 Street and Coney Island. The first train to do this since BMT Rt. 7 Franklin-Nassau was discontinued in the early fifties.

The NX began service on Monday, November 27, 1967 and ran Monday through Friday only between 57 Street-7 Avenue and Brighton Beach via the Broadway Subway, Canal Street Line, Manhattan Bridge (South Side), Fourth Avenue Subway, Sea Beach and Brighton Lines.

In addition to the express run on the Sea Beach Line trains ran express between 57 Street-7 Avenue in Manhattan and 59 Street- 4 Avenue in Brooklyn, also bypassing Dekalb Avenue.

There were only five trains in each direction. This being dictated by the length of the absolute block on the Sea Beach express tracks which extended between the 8 Avenue Interlocking and the Kings Highway Interlocking.

Lengthy delays at Coney Island made the service unattractive and also there was the tendency to run the trains as locals on the Sea Beach if the regular N was late.

Schedule was as follows:

Lv: Brighton Beach ; 723, 744, 756, 808, and 821 AM

Lv: 57 Street; 447, 459, 511, 523 and 536 PM.

Running time was supposed to be 45 minutes.
