Tuscarora Almanac - April 12, 1968 - The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of operation of the NX Broadway-Sea Beach-Brighton Express which ran non-stop over the express tracks of the Sea Beach Line between 59 Street and Coney Island. The first train to do this since BMT Rt. 7 Franklin-Nassau was discontinued in the early fifties.

The NX began service on Monday, November 27, 1967 and ran Monday through Friday only between 57 Street-7 Avenue and Brighton Beach via the Broadway Subway, Canal Street Line, Manhattan Bridge (South Side), Fourth Avenue Subway, Sea Beach and Brighton Lines.

In addition to the express run on the Sea Beach Line trains ran express between 57 Street-7 Avenue in Manhattan and 59 Street- 4 Avenue in Brooklyn, also bypassing Dekalb Avenue.

There were only five trains in each direction. This being dictated by the length of the absolute block on the Sea Beach express tracks which extended between the 8 Avenue Interlocking and the Kings Highway Interlocking.

Lengthy delays at Coney Island made the service unattractive and also there was the tendency to run the trains as locals on the Sea Beach if the regular N was late.

Schedule was as follows:

Lv: Brighton Beach ; 723, 744, 756, 808, and 821 AM

Lv: 57 Street; 447, 459, 511, 523 and 536 PM.

Running time was supposed to be 45 minutes.

Larry, RedbirdR33

April 12 was Good Friday in 1968, so you could say the NX was crucified.

April 12 was Good Friday in 1968,

Steve: I hadn't realized that it was Good Friday. I think I will add that to the main piece. What a day for last runs.

Wow what an express. Hard to imagine what customer geographic that would have served: people from extremely south Brooklyn going to Union sq, herold, sq and times sq? But Gawwd what a trip at the RFW that woulda been. What equipment ran in its short life?

The NX was one of two rush hour services the TA inaugurated to try to patch the stupid decision to leave the Brighton Line with ZERO Broadway service. So it was supposed to draw off traffic from Coney Island through Brighton Beach.

It didn't succeed. Proposals to pickup passengers from 86, Ave U and Kings Highway were ignored. No usage = no service.

We were in the city on either April 16 or 17. I was totally unaware at the time that the NX had been dropped. Come to think about it, I was only vaguely aware of its existence. I had that map with the new post-Chrystie St. routes and the NX was on it (along with the RJ), but didn't give it much thought.

It was a poorly planned attempt to replace the former "Q" express service from Brighton Beach. Plus, all of the letters (QJ, RJ, JJ, QB, etc.) were confusing.

What did the TA actually DO to market the "NX" route to the public?? Aside from the service being included on the map, I've never seen of or heard of any "NX" literature issued publicly prior to Nov 1967.

You're right. The first R-38's ran on the F in 8/1966, but as more came in, the E started seeing them also. When Chrystie Street opened in late Nov. 1967, 3950-3989 (approx) were transferred to the Coney Island Yard to run the NX service; the remaining 160 R-38's wound up only on the then elongated F, with only a rare one on the E. When the NX was discontinued on 4/12/1968, those 40 R-38's stayed on the N service.

This service was doomed 13 years earlier when the IND was in such a rush to disconnect the Brighton line from the IND when it "recaptured" the Culver Line. I don't know the political history behind the deactivation of the ramps from Ocean Parkway to the lower level of West 8th Street, but it sure removed the prospect of any operational flexibility the NX might have had coming through Stillwell Terminal. The tracks south of OP had diamond crossovers connecting the local and express tracks south of OP. If they had at least built a diamond crossover between the express tracks on the West 8th Street side of Ocean Parkway when they deactivated the ramps, OP could have been used as the Southern terminal for the NX during these hours. In actuality, the NX sat on the express track at Ocean Parkway in the afternoons delayed until they could line it up for Brighton Beach. It was confusing to watch and it added to the backlog into Stillwell. It was a mess.

Would it have worked if they had just ended at Coney Island in the same manner as the N, instead of trying to traverse the station and end up on the Brighton Line?

If it had survived, maybe today it would be the X train. Or, maybe just a specially designated N, like the 5 (Nereid) ,6, and 7 express services...

I rode the NX twice. The first time it ran local from 59th Street to Coney Island. The next time we sat on Track A at Coney Island for about 12 minutes waiting for clearance to go up the Brighton Line. It was nice to ride the Sea Beach express tracks but the time saved was more than made up by the delay at Coney.

Brighton Beach had Northbound departures in the morning and Southbound arrivals in the afternoon departing/arriving in OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS out/in of the station. Has that ever happened anywhere in the system before or after?

Chambers Street on the BMT Centre Street Line had trains terminating from both directions. No. 10 arrived and departed on the center tracks while No. 1 and 3 trains terminated on the outside tracks.

East 180th Street on the IRT White Plains Road Line on weekend evenings from about 8 PM to 12 midnight. No. 9 trains from Dyre Avenue reversed south of the station while No. 2 trains terminated on the middle tracks. (Early 60's ).

There were probably a few other places as well.

If I'm not mistaken, some of the PM southbounds did drop out at CI.

Yeah, I have no date on that. Got the picture in an email many years ago, so no information as to when.

Although Myrtle/Chambers trains arrived and terminated on the middle tracks, only non rush hour West End Locals (and prior to that Culver trains) actually terminated there and changed ends N/B. Brighton specials arriving via the tunnel while discharging passengers there continued over the bridge light back to CIYd. When the Culvers were still operating, they operated N/B via the tunnel and returned S/B via the bridge during the rush hours,

Since at the time I only worked midnight, I don’t recall but I seem to remember the schedules calling for all trains to operate to BBC.

The NX was long gone before I signed in there, but I remember stories of how seriously the NX screwed up both ends on the tracks out of STL and that towards the end, since nobody was really using it, they'd drop out trains in the PM just to reduce the madness at BB. For all the plans for the NX, more of them operated as N's anyway when the railroad got jacked.

There's also the issue of the black painted roof. While I was too young to remember (an infant, in fact), everything I've seen of the bright red paint jobs applied in 1968-69 to R16/27/30 shows a red roof as well.

The dark red paint and black roof shout "Redbird" to me.

I remember that tartar red scheme that many R-27/30s got. The entire car was painted red, including the roof.
