There is no impediment to escalators either. But of course if the escalator is not working it can (sometimes) be used as a staircase.

These things are mechanical devices, they need maintenance and repairs. Yo are not looking at these devices from the top, but I presume that they will take up at least 18" of platform space, or will make an island platform 3' narrower. For some that is quite problematic.

As for simple pipe fences. Yes, jumpers will still jump, but they can climb over one of these things too. But people waiting for train can lean against them and look to their heart's content without fear of being pushed, shoved or jostled onto the tracks. Is there added safety? Yes, for those who choose to stand along the rail. You know the kind of person who is willing to stand aside to let others off first. Some will always line up at the opening and will knock people down who are trying to detrain.

There is no good solution. LION thinks that doors and sliding walls are out of the question, both for price and maintenance. If we have one 12-9 per week, the odds are 1 to 51 million that you will fall in. You change or even eliminate those odds by your own behaviors.

Put up the pipe railings at places where platforms are particularly crowded Put up warning signs, and that will be sufficient.
