Years ago, the Mashantuckets tweaked their slot machines to pay off more often. While they were raking in the money, they became aware that if nobody was winning, people might lose interest.

That is absolutely correct. In Vegas, I personally have stayed much longer in casinos where I win "token" wins every so often. It DOES psychologically keep your interest. I probably even spent more in those casinos, where I "won" even token wins.

For example, on the screen slot machine games (the ones that are becoming the most prevalent at most casinos) have are let's say "5 cents", and you need to play "9 credits" or should play "45 credits", etc. Each time you play, it deducts however many credits you want to play on however many lines you want to play. (If there are lets say 5 "reels", you can have many diagonal and zigzagging lines on it) too, so even when they aren't straight across, the wins are determined by lines, not positions. Also, many of these also have "bonus rounds", which play a little sort of movie where you can win even more credits, which pop up every once in a while.

In any event, what I mean is that you bet let's say 1 credit for 9 lines, that's actually 9 credits used, and then it comes back, and you won "5 credits". You get all excited, that you "won", but it really snatched 4 credits in the process. Of course, the more credits you bet, the more you win if you do get a REAL win, so that's the incentive to do that. Also, sometimes you will bet "9 credits", and then win "15 credits back". It's not a heck of a lot, but again, it keeps you at the machine to slowly lose your money.....
