I can sort through yelp views and find either a consensus or at least people that seem to have the same tastes as me. Trip Advisor is harder because the expectations for what should be a good hotel are so different. I read them sometimes, but I don't find them useful. In fact, most hotels are ok to me and I can't understand all of the bad reviews.

You spelled TripAdvisor wrong twice. :)

And my biggest problem with TripAdvisor is that there are tons of fake reviews. You can tell when a hotel gets way too many reviews, all great and by people making their first review but it's still annoying.

LOL @ the asterisked comment.

It's true. I'm perfectly content in a clean, simple hotel, but some people expect that bottom of the level chains to be as good as the high end stuff. Somehow, people manage to expect McDonald's to be sub-par to what you can cook at home on the grill with meat from a good butcher, yet somehow people expect $50/night hotels to be as good as $300 hotels...

As for Yelp, I've seen the same phenomenon at play, but then I've seen it at Amazon and Newegg for stuff that I've purchased. Some people will never be satisfied. :-)

I can't dispute that, as I've been to lots of Italian restaurants. They can actually hold their own with some of the good ones. Of course, if you're looking for stuff like a chicken parm sub sandwich, the local pizza joint is without fail . . .

A properly run OG makes good food. Again, if you wanna chance it with an unknown, potentially expensive restaurant...

One of the most expensive, and WORST meals I have ever had was at Pellegrinos in Little Italy, I spend $135 for god awful food. And Pelligrinos is considered one of the top Italian restaurants out there.

With websites like yelp and chowhound, etc, there's not that much leaving to chance anymore, although yes, there is chance you could hit lemons. The days of just picking a spot out of the phone book are long gone.

OG does make good food; my point was to debate the food snob claim. Some people just don't like it or other chains.

Reviews can be bought, and online ones can even be the owner himself :O

Online fora like Chowhound are good since false reviews can be wrestled down, kinda like this place :)

I think the sense of dining adventure is proportional to time, and of course, money. If you're in town for one night, a sure thing like OG is prudent. If in town for a week then there's time to explore.

And they are food snobs. Again, fine dining it's not, but it's not bad either. As I said, you can do way worse at some bad mom and pop Italian places. While you won't get the orgasmic experience meal either, you also won't get the meal from hell.

Funny you mention shopping center... We have a pretty upscale restaurant that's located in a store front of a shopping center. The waitstaff absolutely sucks. The food good but extremely small portions... but the place is full of snacks would feel they should go there because of the name... and will suffer with snobby stuck up wait staff

Really? I get treated like a king. I can count on one hand the times I've encountered a snotty waitri at a fine dining establishment and still have enough fingers left over to flip the snotty ones off. This out of hundreds of times I've dined at so-called good places in NY, New England, Colorado, California, Las Vegas, New Mexico, Arizona, Montreal, Toronto, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia.

Not only am I treated like a king but the waiter is professional enough know what kind of waiter to be, just by the initial body/eye language. Not only that but drink glasses are never less than a third full and he or she just appears with a fresh bottle ready to be corked. Other than a handful of times, the service was perfect.

If a snotty waitri happens more often than not, I suspect the customer has attitude or might be buzzed.
