New iPad hits 116 degrees - mind your scrotum, chaps |
|
Posted by SLRT on Wed Mar 21 07:37:43 2012 Ouch!!New iPad hits 116 degrees - mind your scrotum, chaps The new iPad runs considerably hotter than its predecessor, tests have shown - making it perfect for reading in bed, perhaps, but alarming some users. According to Consumer Reports, it gets as warm as 116 degrees Farenheit, warmer than human skin, especially when playing graphics-intensive games. "When unplugged, the back of the new iPad reached temperatures as high as 113 degrees Fahrenheit. It was only when plugged in that it hit 116 degrees. The hottest areas weren't evenly distributed throughout the iPad's back, but were concentrated near one corner of the display," says Consumer Reports' Donna Tapellini. "During our tests, I held the new iPad in my hands. When it was at its hottest, it felt very warm but not especially uncomfortable if held for a brief period." The new version is a good twelve degrees Farenheit hotter than the iPad 2, says Consumer Reports. It's stopped short of saying that the high temperature is actually dangerous, but said users should be careful. However, according to Apple, it's all part of the plan - the company says the device is running within thermal specifications. It does, though, recommend that it shouldn't be used in temperatures of 95 degrees or above. Users on the Apple support forum seem to be having mixed experiences, with some saying the device is pleasantly warm, but others concerned - one felt it was too hot for a child to use safely, for example. However, use by children might end up being a moot point, if too many people are using their iPads on their lap. In studies, even cooler-running laptops have been associated with 'scrotal hyperthermia', potentially reducing male fertility. Ergonomists have already been urging tablet users not to use their devices on their laps - this latest news might persuade them, where fear of a bit of neck-ache hasn't. |

Don't you have to pay for an app which allows you to access limited segments of the onboard storage like a thumb drive? You may have the useless parrot, Siri, but Android 2.3 has native support for object coded Smart Actions to, say, put your phone on vibrate as you arrive at work. I'd rather my phone efficiently do what I need without asking than talk back to me. Oh, and this thing hums along at 20mb/s.Don't get me wrong, I'm more likely to purchase an iPad (probably the iPad2 than the self immolating iPad: The Sequel) as opposed to an Android tablet just because it'd provide access to those apps which have foolishly not made it to the Google Market. But the fruit's phones simply aren't on the same level as the latest offerings from Samsung, Motorola, and HTC. |

Don't you have to pay for an app which allows you to access limited segments of the onboard storage like a thumb drive? No, it can be jailbroken for free. But even then, I have no interest in accessing the file system like it was still the 80s and we're still marveling over the ability to group things into folders. The ability to store things into folders just makes it a pain in the ass for novice users who don't remember where they put their file. Siri, but Android 2.3 has native support for object coded Smart Actions to, say, put your phone on vibrate as you arrive at work. Actually, that is cool. I've had that on a non-smart phone I used in the mid 00s. |

I know people who have worked there, they're now coders for hire in the world of BSD. They go there full of hope, told that they can be rich working there. They can support their families who are destitute back in the farm country. And they arrive. In droves.Once in though, they're held captive in the dormitories which work just like the old coal towns of the Appalachians. They're worked like prisoners. And they're not allowed to leave unless they get fired and kicked off the property. True, it's better than eating dirt but not all that much better. Would it amuse you to know that many of the folks who work in those halls of assembly have never seen what they make finished and working, much less able to own one? |

Foxconn does the final assembly of components. There are numerous other small operations surrounding the Foxconn factories where conditions are far worse. But there are many other companies all over China that do in fact pay their people better, and treat them better than Foxconn.I'm not spouting the usual anti-Foxconn claptrap - I know people who worked there and while it's not as bad as many human rights groups are claiming, it's nowhere near as much of a panacea as Apple and other companies are claiming either. |

Would it amuse you to know that many of the folks who work in those halls of assembly have never seen what they make finished and working, much less able to own one?So? Like I said, it's not much worse than a Western factory. Many people from the hick states move to cities like NY or LA wanting to "make it big," but end up becoming crack whores. It's sad. At least here they get honest work. The dormitories are provided because these cities are developing quickly and there aren't many places to live that aren't slums and shantytowns. |

No, the dormitories are to enforce the ownership of Foxconn. You have to EARN the right to leave the company town once a year to visit your family and not many make the grade. Three folks who worked there are on our payroll, and four more of them work directly for the BSD foundation. They've noticed the difference.Look into "company town" in the days of coal. That's what Foxconn is doing, right down to the commissary that you'll never get out of debt with. |

While Foxconn's record is pretty bad, they're actually a lot better than many of the other companies there. Better quality management can plan ahead so that it's orderly. The boat still takes 10 to 14 days to get to Cali.China's major manufacturing advantage isn't actually that, though that's the fable that's sold. They learned from what America USED to do. Have your suppliers right down the street so that you can change things quickly and not have to wait days for "Just In Time" ... JIT is perhaps the biggest disaster in American manufacturing. Cuts cost at the expense of "whoops - your truck overturned, you can shut down now." Meanwhile in China, you need more, you can walk down the street and throw more on the cart. Your factory stays in production. "Clustering" is what makes it work, not rousting whipped out people two hours after they hit the pillow. |

It's very nice so I hear. The one thing that absolutely pisses me off though about those and the fruitphone is that I love to stream movies and Apple absolutely sucks at that. You have to copy the damned files onto the device if you want to see something and that means dealing with the bloat of Itombs. There are no viable apps (that actually work) for either device and for me, being able to stream from the video server so I have my entire screen available for work would be nice. I can understand Steve hating Flash and all, but the crippled VLC thing available has FFMPEG codecs with it and you can transcode from FLV to MP4 with no trouble if only they'd even allow that much. For watching streams, fruit toys SUCK. But it's a really great phone, and flipping birds is fun on the big screen. Pity it can't stream. Then I'd be really happy, but that's not going to happen. :( |

One advantage of the system is that allows them to spin up operations at a moment's notice by just waking up the employees and getting them to work within a short period of time. There are tons of advantages to screwing your workers; that's why businesses do it, when they can get away with it. One cannot defend a business practice for that reason alone. Your point in that it is as good or better than the alternatives is taken, though. |

One can defend the business practice if one does not consider it "screwing your workers." I don't consider it that. Provided, of course that the accommodations are adequate. It appears that they are in this case. |
