Senate judiciary committee endorses controversial contraceptive bill
By Thania A. Betancourt - Arizona State Press

Arizona House Bill 2625 will allow employers to reject insurance coverage for contraceptives for their employees if it conflicts with their religious beliefs.
The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 6-2 Monday to endorse a controversial bill that would allow Arizona employers the right to deny health insurance coverage for contraceptives based on religious objections.

Arizona House Bill 2625, authored by Majority Whip Debbie Lesko, R-Glendale, would permit employers to ask their employees for proof of medical prescription if they seek contraceptives for non-reproductive purposes, such as hormone control or acne treatment.
“I believe we live in America. We don’t live in the Soviet Union,” Lesko said. “So, government should not be telling the organizations or mom and pop employers to do something against their moral beliefs.” [government should instead tell women that they need to ask for employer permission for their use of pills instead - SMAZ]
Lesko said this bill responds to a contraceptive mandate in the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act signed into law March 2010.

“My whole legislation is about our First Amendment rights and freedom of religion,” Lesko said. “All my bill does is that an employer can opt out of the mandate if they have any religious objections.”
Glendale resident Liza Love said the bill would impose on women’s rights to keep their medical records private.
Love spoke to the committee about her struggle with polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis, conditions requiring her to use birth control.
“I wouldn’t mind showing my employer my medical records,” Love said. “But there are 10 women behind me that would be ashamed to do so.”

Planned Parenthood Arizona President Bryan Howard said he opposes HB 2625 and any bill against the accessibility of women’s health care in Arizona.
“The bill is part of the assault on women’s health care across the country,” Howard said.
Howard said there haven’t been any complaints from insurance companies since 2002, when Arizona passed the Contraceptive Equity Law , a measure prohibiting religious employers from denying its employees contraceptives for non-contraceptive purposes.
“This is an attack on women’s health care and their ability to make health care decisions for themselves and their families according to their faith,” Howard said.

Father John Muir, a priest at the All Saints Catholic Newman Center on the Tempe campus, said the controversial issue is not about birth control, but religious freedom and the First Amendment.
“It’s not about birth control,” Muir said. “It’s about the right to live out your beliefs and principles without inference by the state.”
Political science sophomore Megan Riley said she supports making contraceptives accessible under all health care plans.
Riley said the employer doesn’t have the right to impose their religious beliefs on their employees.
“Taking away birth control is not a religious freedom,” Riley said. “It’s oppression.”
Ryan McCarthy, a third-year law student and ASU chapter president of the St. Thomas More Society, a Catholic law student organization, said he is against the federal health care law.
“Law shouldn’t require intruding on individuals’ rights and moral beliefs,” McCarthy said.

Father Muir is wrong. That bill provides employers the right to impose their religious belief on their employees. That is not what a secular corporative employment contract is supposed to be about (I have no issue with actual non-incorporated churches being allowed this exemption, but ONLY actual churches engaged in active religious practice).

Business is not about morality, it's about business. Which is just about the furthest thing from religion there is when you think about it. Makes me wonder what, or more accurately IF, they're thinking at all down in AZ.

Believe it or not, the general populace here isn't as crazy as SMAZ loves to insist.

What is conveniently left out is that this law doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of actually doing anything, as the law commonly known as "Obamacare" would overrule it anyways.

This law would lead to a bunch of lawsuits that the state has no chance at winning.

It's really just political theater to rile up the Republican base. The problem is that it's causing independents to jump ship.

I know I haven't been to Arizona, but seriously, from Jan Brewer ("threatened by the President"), to John McCain ("Mexicans start fires"), all the silly laws that seem to come out of there, it's hard for outsiders not to get the impression that some crazy stuff goes on there...

I'd say causing independents to jump ship is a good thing, but there's no chance of Obama winning the state, so it really doesn't matter much...

Idiotic statement. Why is government in the business of forcing employers to provide those pills when they're available outside their centralized "healthcare" system? Even more so, forcing religious organizations to provide them when it's against their doctrine? This is a war that the leftists are not going to win.

Males have an advantage at birth (1.05 males for every female) Between 15-64, it's 1 male for every 1 female). The only time it does change in women's favor is after 65, where it's .75 male for every female, and that's only because women have a longer lifespan.
I call BS on your post because while yes, older people are more likely to vote, and the age where males have the advantage is in the not able to vote age range, the older women are not going to care about this as much younger women.
You make this appear to be a much bigger issue than it really is for the voting public.

Ummm ... if you look into the "science" on it, the real mitigating factor in the swap is wars that start knocking off the males around 18'ish ...

As to voting, Obama brought out the young in 2008. That's unusual. It's the geezers that always show up like voting is some "early bird special" and frankly, the republicans, despite their attraction to the geezers, have been seriously pissing THEM off too ...

Elections come down to those who show up. Republicans have been a minority in this country, but they pandered to the ones who usually show up recently. This time around, that particular group is pretty pissed off. And aside from those who don't like "colored people" many of them are concerned about their medicare and social security and the republicans haven't been doing themselves any favors on those fronts lately.

Probably, but as mentioned, males have a slight advantage until 16. In the over 16-65 range, it's 1 male for every female. It's in the over 65 range where women take control, as they have a longer life expectancy.

As to voting, Obama brought out the young in 2008. That's unusual. It's the geezers that always show up like voting is some "early bird special"

And that's exactly what I said in my post.

and frankly, the republicans, despite their attraction to the geezers, have been seriously pissing THEM off too ...

But not for the reasons bingbong spouted. The older ones will not care about this topic as much as younger ones, and in that range women do not outnumber men, so I called BS on her post.
As for "Republicans pissing off the elderly, the Democrats have too.

Something folks have to keep straight here is that bingbong and I are two separate people. We my express our own issues differently but we're largely on the same page even if we have differing opinions here and there. I'm tired of politics, she's still fighting. She's also younger than me too. Heh.

That said, both of us are up near that upper cutover age and we get to talk to a lot of geezers as well as younger folks. But here's the thing. Geezers are very concerned about their own kids and what they're seeing them struggling through. Most of those geezers also remember the republicans for what they were and are aghast about what they're seeing the teabaggers pulling. And that's despite their anger over the democrats handing out excuses for the lazy.

The unfairness of the realities in the past 10 years has really got them angry, and the turnaround since 2010 with the baggers coming in have kinda neitralized their anger over the democrats running rampant in the previous two years. Sorry ... out here, we attend meetings when the congressfish come to town. We go to the town hall and sit and argue. Maybe it's different down where you are, but folks up here are engaged, vocal and angry at DC. And it's more directed at the republicans than the dems although truth be everybody's completely fed up with the lot of them.

But if a choice has to be made between the two, it's seriously not looking good for the republicans, especially after all the batshit flying lately ... I'll leave it there because aside from flinging poo at bullshit which is what I come here to do, I've pretty much given up on politicos, I'm working with folks to circumvent their stupid entirely ... despite Zucotti park the OWS'ers up here have actually turned some heads by acting sane ...

Seniors vote because they have a bigger stake than young people; they have property as Rand Paul likes, and they have children, grandchildren, and sometimes great-grandchildren to protect. Older people's interests are much more affected by what politicians do, so they feel more compelled to engage.

Elections come down to those who show up. Republicans have been a minority in this country, but they pandered to the ones who usually show up recently. This time around, that particular group is pretty pissed off. We'll see.

In truth, weather Obama wins will all come down to two states: Ohio and Florida. He will likely lose all the traditionally red-leaning swing states; I don't see him carrying VA, NC, or IN this time around, but a win in OH and FL would make having the other states unnecessary.

That's it in a nutshell. I believe CO + VA would do it for him, but without both of those he needs OH or FL.

I say he loses Arizona too. The way the left AND Obama has treated that state...I way it goes against Obama. We should start a poll thread with bets we can tally election night...lol. winners get bragging rights...lol

But Romney has the local Mormons. Though Romney could still pull a Palin and get someone who's a complete voter-turn off for his VP pick (not sure if Christie would help him), which would have Obama win a few more states, I think it'll be close in AZ and most redder states, favoring Romney.

nothing wrong with what i said. no different than identifying conservatives as the "Fox News crowd" or "Breitbart.tv crowd".

If it's a squeaker or an easy Romney win, then for sure, Obama loses AZ. But if it's an easy Obama win, then not so clear.

I can tell you that Univision is in full campaign mode for Obama. Lots of content about Dream Act, "Dreamers", etc......They think they can flip Arizona for Obama.

Obama and his partners in the media(which is nearly every media company minus Rupert) are going to promise a lot to los Latinos to get their vote, then turn around and tell them the GOP is blocking everything.

So what?

That's not a swing vote.

It's like saying that Obama has the blacks.

You assume Obama will have an easy national victory. You might turn out to be right. You might also turn out to be wrong. If you really know for sure, you should use your ability to predict the future to predict stock prices instead.

The S&P 500 will gain another 10-12% between now and Dec 31.

No less than 8%.
