Then you must hate your country (since you apparently don't like him). I don't understand the concept, as once the person is the candidate they have a chance of becoming president. I would want the best candidate the Democrats have to offer vs the best the Republicans have to offer.

I think we've got a misunderstanding of what I'm getting at. I'm not trying to defend Santorum or the Catholics in their war on contraceptives. I support contraception; my gf and I use it. Rather I'm trying to say that well-off, educated people (of all races) shouldn't hold back on having as many children as they'd like to and can support because they feel they are doing there part to curb "overpopulation" In reality, all they are doing is consigning future generations to suffer in a world with proportionally fewer bright people to take care of it. We're in agreement on every other issue here.

The best the Republicans have to offer (which, really, is Mitt Romney) sucks. In that case, I would want the best man for the job (Obama) to have the best chance to win, which is greatly improved if Santorum is the nominee.

LOL. If he's the candidate, there's plenty chance he can win. First off, lots can happen between now and November - good or bad for either candidate, whether it be Obama, or one of the Republican candidates. Once you put him in a position to win, he CAN win. You better hope that the candidate chosen is the best of the choices, as either the Democrat or the Republican can win.

It's hardly likely if it's Sanitotrium. Just the social issues alone will hound him (not to mention "man on dog"?), putting off women in particular in droves. Then there's his voting record which puts off republicans. Witness his recent popularity dip. That's a result of "one for the team" a comment he was actually booed for in the last debate.

Higher income, higher educated people have fewer children because:

They want to provide better for the children they have.

The couple is likely to be near or over 30 when starting a family, and the risks involved for both mother and child increase with age.

The more children she has, the harder it is for a mother to hold down her own job.

Basically, being tied down to raising a lot of children is a repression it and of itself, and many do not want to live that way.

Same here. Plus it'll be a whole lot more fun with man on dog instead of dog on car.

As to the gas thing, people need to comprehend that we now have 4 major economies (Europe, China,India, USA) competing for the available resources. Once they get the issues WRT XL straight, that will do nothing since the oil will go to China since they're willing to pay more for it.

The best bet for the time being is natural gas heating and fuel efficient hybrid vehicles, along with a LOT of investment in alternative energy. Save the oil for trains and planes, as neither runs well on alternatives....yet..

Hehe you have too much faith in the people. The people like punish whoever is in office, regardless of party, when the economy is sour (read: when their personal economy is sour). High gas doesn't help with that, and that alone may be enough to sway some voters away from Obama, sadly.

The best bet for the time being is natural gas heating

Which means more fracking, though...

and fuel efficient hybrid vehicles

Tesla is the dark horse. If they can pump out a decent, roomy car in their projected $30,000 range as planned with the Bluestar, they will see a lot of sales, even with the battery/charging limitations being what they are at the moment. Once they get the Bluestar on showroom floors, they need to get a push for more high-voltage/high-current charging stations installed in more places.

along with a LOT of investment in alternative energy.

Nuclear is the way to go in the long-term (with perhaps solar in the very long-term). All the generation IV designs mitigate the problems that currently plague nuclear plants, particularly meltdown and radioactive waste, but without more approval and construction of new reactors, we may never get there.

Nuclear is the way to go in the long-term

Nuclear in the long term with new plants and reprocessed waste, subsidize solar panels on homes for additional electrical generation, wind where feasible, and aim for coal and natural gas liquefaction as a transportation fuel. And in the long-term, a shift away from current auto-oriented planning, and more toward public transport friendly forms.
