There are so many things going on in that article. The argument about Asians is similar to past arguments about limiting the number of Jews in prestigious schools. But the one very interesting paragraph, which the Times doesn't explore, is this: 'Her mother, Annmarie Miller, a nursing assistant at a hospital in the Bronx, recalled a cousin’s reaction when she mentioned Rudi’s pick: “You have to be Chinese or Indian to get in there.” A co-worker, also black, “said the exam is built to exclude blacks because it’s heavy on math, and black people can’t do math,” Mrs. Miller said.' [Emphasis mine] I'll let go the stab at racist intent implied there and go to the black person's perception that black people can't do math. At worst it implies a genetic predisposition that has never been scientifically demonstrated; at least it implies a defeatism, a mental or cultural block, where thinking makes it (not) so. |

You again obviously failed to read the article. The thrust of the article was not at all about Asian kids. It was on the increasingly fewer black kids that went there. It explored a whole host of perfectly logical reasons for this. Among those reasons was NOT that too many Asians attended. |

This seems to be the trend when race is removed as a consideration. California "UC" (University of California) schools have very few black students anymore. UCLA enrolls something like six thousand freshman and only about 100 are non-athletic scholarship black students. That's about the same ratio as Stuyvesant. |

They want to be there, but since their parents don't have $1000 to send them to prep schools, they're shut out one of the top schools. This is the part where Chris, Train Dude, and Luch will call them lazy, welfare thugs, but there are many black kids with 95 averages in middle school who can't get into Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, or even Brooklyn Tech because of that exam. |

By definition, students who go to Prep schools do not go to Stuyvesant. Unless you mean test prep. And I disagree. I don't know how "g-loaded" the exam is, but if they're getting 95s in middle school, they could just be students at a crappy middle school. |

I meant test prep, but the fact remains that Asians attend test prep academies that specifically prepare them for the Specialized High School exam as well as the Hunter College High School exam. Like the article says, they start preparation in elementary school. Blacks and Latinos do not have the luxury of attending such schools because they can't afford them (Luch or Chris will probably make a stupid reply like they can afford Air Jordans and X Box). |

Test prep is not required to take the entrance exam, nor is it going to guarantee success. Judging from the article, a lot of it is also cultural and psychological. If they've learned enough, they should at least make it into Brooklyn Tech. |

This reminds me of something. My friend was accepted to Stuyvesant, Tech, Malloy, and St. Francis Prep but put on the waiting list at Aviation. We were wondering what was up with that.I agree that they can make a difference. I'm of the opinion that many kids don't even take advantage of prep course and Spider-Pig is probably one. I'm also of the opinion that there are free prep courses that all NYC residents of all skin colors can take advantage of if they really want it. When I went to public school, 90% of the teachers were Jewish. No one cared. We just went to school. These days, people in many minority communities would probably be pissed if that were the case. |

Luch will call them lazy, welfare thugs,I have never called blacks lazy and realize that most blacks are not on welfare and would rather work. I have said many times that if a company opened a factory in ENY or Newark, blacks would line up 1,000 or more deep for work. My problem with minorities is their inability to confront reality. I'm in NYC for my monthly haircut listening to all kinds of drama about stop and frisk and racial profiling. Then I read another story about a cop being shot by who else, a minority but there are many black kids with 95 averages in middle school who can't get into Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, or even Brooklyn Tech because of that exam. If "that exam" is the same for everyone, I don't see the problem. How is the exam unfair to minoritie |

That doesn't preclude a student from even trying, though, which is apparently a much bigger factor. And even if the student doesn't take a prep course, there must be books out there they can get, new or used. |

IAWTP, especially if the SHSAT contains a fair amount of "g-loading" (which I'm not sure it does; haven't found anything definitive via Google). Even so, some of the remarks in the article speak volumes:[A co-worker, also black, “said the exam is built to exclude blacks because it’s heavy on math, and black people can’t do math,”] It's tough enough to get in, but the notion that the exam is "biased" plus cats discouraging the kids from even trying certainly doesn't help. my blog |
