The "bad" part of Huntington Station is a relatively small area (1 square mile, maybe) just south of the LIRR station (though a bit to the northwest as well). This area probably is about 70/25/5 Hispanic/Black/White.Otherwise it is a mix that runs from lower middle class neighborhoods to upper middle class neighborhoods and generally mixed ethnically. It is very difficult to get data on the area because most data is done by zip code. The zip code for Huntington Station (11746) also includes South Huntington (mainly middle and upper middle class and largely white) and Dix Hills (mainly upper middle class with some just plain wealthy thrown in and a mix of white, black, Asian and Indian). |

Brentwood Grandmother Keeps Active Despite Age and Other Obstacles |

Posted by DAnd124 on Mon Jan 2 13:24:52 2012, in response to The New Brentwood Thread, posted by LuchAAA on Sun Aug 21 16:33:18 2011. http://maplewood-brentwood.patch.com/articles/placeholder-for-maxine-storyOne day before her late husband’s birthday, Maxine Reisenleiter jumped from a plane, falling at a speed of 125 miles an hour. A parachute slowed her descent, leaving the 76-year-old widow bruised from the harness but happy nonetheless. It was her maiden jump, an event designed to honor her husband, Harry ‘Lee’ Reisenleiter, who was a paratrooper during WWII. “He always wanted to jump without being shot at,” Maxine said. Because Lee never had the chance to skydive after the war and during their 52 years of marriage, Maxine did it for him posthumously in July 2000. Since then, the Brentwood widow and grandmother jumped six more times, and helped transform a 1942 C-47 used to transport paratroopers on D-Day during World War II into a medical cargo plane for Wings of Hope. Maxine was one of 18 women who called themselves the ‘Rosie the Riveter Crew’ that retooled the aging aircraft from military to humanitarian missions. It would drop medical supplies to remote sections of the world. The all-women crew dismantled the plane, wrestling off parts beginning with the nosecone and propellers. “Some of those bolts were so huge it took two of us to loosen them, but we did it,” she said. The women refurbished everything, including the wings, which spanned 90 feet. “We removed them, sanded them, power-blasted, primed and wrapped them with a special fabric that we ironed beforehand,” Maxine said. They wound another layer of fabric on the wings and sewed it with one-foot long needles. A couple of retired engineers stood by and told the women what to do. “It was so much fun,” Maxine said, her cornflower blue eyes sparkling. The project took about a year. She was 78 when the plane was completed. At the same time that Maxine was working on the plane, she was also a hospice volunteer, helping those with less than six months to live. Her dedication to her patients runs deep. “I’ve spent the night with them. I’ve shopped for them. I’ve cooked for them,” she said. She received the state's Heart of Hospice award in 2004. But Maxine has a personal life too. Twice a year she drives to visit family in Texas. She makes the eleven-hour trip it to Dallas in a day, then on to Texarkana. Despite these feats, and in spite of her age, Maxine considers herself to be a “run-of-the-mill” and “average” senior. Neighbor and school board member Katrina Harper admires her, though. “She’s unstoppable,” Harper said. “I just love her!” Although Maxine is Texas born, she’s vintage Brentwood. Her family moved from Minter, TX, when Maxine was a toddler. She attended Brentwood’s old Grade School No. 1 (now the site of Walgreen’s) and was taught by Josephine McGrath, for whom McGrath Elementary was named. She attended Mark Twain when it was a junior high school. Maxine was also Brentwood High School’s first drum majorette. “I was good at twirling a baton over telephone wires,” she said. A member of the class of 1941, she is also one of the founding members of the high school’s alumnae association. Following graduation, and during the war, she worked the switchboard at Union Electric. At night, she volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond Heights as a nurse’s aid. “ I was trained to do everything a real nurse did so they could go overseas,” Maxine said. She met her husband after the war at the annual Webster Groves and Kirkwood Thanksgiving Day football game in 1945. They married in September 1946. Their children Harry and Melissa (Missy) were born in 1947 and 1953. When the children were older, Maxine managed Brentwood Lanes. “Working at Brentwood Lanes in it's hey-day was a great experience. It was a family affair. I could have them with me. Harry (16), I had working as a mechanic on Saturdays; Missy (10), was the baby sitter for the leagues, and my husband would be bowling or running errands,” she said. Maxine still lives in the family home on St. Clair that she shared with her husband for most of their marriage. However, she almost lost it. Fire broke out a year ago when a space heater in the basement malfunctioned. Maxine had been working over the heater, topping off candles when, by chance, her computer beeped, indicating a new email. In the few steps it took her to get to the computer, the heater had a power surge, sending a huge flame where Maxine had stood. “I heard a whoosh,” she said. In the seven minutes it took the fire department to arrive, the fire had made its way through the center of the house. Damage was estimated at $100,000. After the house was repaired–it took several months–she tripped on a nail on the wooden stairs leading to her basement. It was a near-fatal fall that left her in the hospital and in a rehab center for two months. Though still bruised, she’s back home. “I’m lucky to be alive,” she said. “I thank my guardian angel, but I sure keep her busy. Although she wants “to stick with hospice” in the New Year and is waiting to be assigned to a patient, Maxine has not dismissed the possibility of doing something else too. “I’ll just have to wait and see what comes along,” she said. |

Late Monday night, Carl Ward, wanted on a charge of felony domestic battery, was found inside a vehicle at the Sanctuary Walk Apartments off East 21st Street. JSO Chief Tom Hackney said when Ward refused to roll down his windows, a backup officer responded and repeated attempts were made to get the man to respond. Hackney said that as officers returned to their patrol cars, Ward revved his engine and backed up toward police, crashing into one of the cruisers. One officer fired several shots and hit Ward at least once in the upper body. "He was using the vehicle as a weapon," Hackney said. "The officer used deadly force to protect the other officer from that very large vehicle." Ward was transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The officers involved were identified as Rudy Bueno and Brian Kremler. |

Blayne Tullis, 22, is considered a suspect in last week’s indecent exposure case in Franklin’s Fieldstone Farms subdivision and in another case on I-65 in Brentwood. In the I-65 case, a man exposed himself while committing a lewd act in traffic at about 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 27. A witness was able to give Brentwood Police the license plate number, which is registered to Tullis, and a description of a metallic blue Toyota Scion that matched the car in two other cases. On Dec. 28 a woman told police that a man in such a car followed her and her teenage daughter to their home in Fieldstone Farms. He pulled up to their driveway, opened his car door and exposed himself to the woman while engaging in a lewd act. Detectives have linked these cases to others. On Oct. 10, 17, and 24, a man matching Tullis’ description and driving a Scion followed a woman walking her baby in The Meadows Subdivision off of Del Rio Pike in Franklin. On his third encounter with that victim, the man opened his car door and exposed himself while committing a lewd act. Tullis was in custody on Tuesday afternoon at the Williamson County Jail on an $8,000 bond. Franklin Police have charged Tullis with two counts of Indecent Exposure and one count of Stalking. Police in Brentwood have charged him with an additional count of Indecent Exposure in their case. Tullis is due in court on at 2 p.m. on Jan. 12. Tullis was employed by the Franklin Parks Department as a seasonal employee starting in June 2010, and was hired full time in November 2011. Tullis was off duty and in his personal vehicle when the incidents occurred. He was terminated on Tuesday. “This is extremely shocking to us,” City Administrator Eric Stuckey said. “The city is very thorough in conducting background checks and nothing came up to red flag this individual during the hiring process. This behavior is intolerable and this individual was terminated immediately.” |

The former senator, arriving shortly after a TV interview, gave the crowd more than an hour of Q&A. The reporters in the room -- two from the Washington Post, three from the Huffington Post, Newsweek, etc, etc -- got to see the candidate tackle everything from climate change to SSI to the Tax Policy Center's scoring of the Affordable Care Act to why the Chilean model for Social Security wasn't workable to why Medicare's cost ratio was "phony." ("Because it's government... it's not a market, it's not real.") Before Santorum got there I talked to Jamie Fitzpatrick, a Santorum fan (he had a first edition of his book), who wanted to hear the senator talk about today's recess appointments to the CFPB and NLRB. He got it. According to Santorum, what Obama did was probably illegal. "The Senate should go and take the president to court," he said. In a long event, with a fairly rapt and quiet crowd, it was one of the biggest applause lines. I've seen candidates, riding some sort of wave, come into a primary state just to give a speech. Santorum was untiring and game. A young Massachusetts voter, obviously trying to rattle him (Santorum jokingly banned any more questions from non-Granite staters), read out a column that one of Santorum's nephews had written, calling him a big government stooge. "He's a Ron Paul supporter," sighed Santorum. "God bless him. It's a phase." Later, dismissively: "The people who call me a big government guy are libertarians." |

Brentwood voters OK $5.1M school budget; curriculum coordinator |
|
|
Posted by dand124 on Sun Mar 11 20:00:57 2012, in response to The New Brentwood Thread, posted by LuchAAA on Sun Aug 21 16:33:18 2011. http://www.seacoastonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120311/NEWS/203110319/-1/NEWSMAPAfter much consideration, residents voted to approve a $5,134,767 operating budget for Swasey Central School at its school district meeting Saturday. "We're just very pleased that the community has approved and agreed with the board's decision," said School Board Chairperson Dianne Vosgien. "The board works very hard to be very fiscally responsible and work in the student and community's best interest." The passing of Article 1 represents a 1.5 percent increase from last year's operating budget, and an increase of 16 cents per $1,000 of property value. Of the major changes between last and this year's budget, the addition of a curriculum coordinator was perhaps the biggest area of contention among voters. "Our students already score very well without the coordinator," said resident Patty Shorland. "If we're all in agreement that we're doing well, what do we need it for? This is just another layer of administration. If we're going to add positions, they should be to benefit the students." According to results from the fall 2011 New England Common Assessment Program test, student scores were above proficient in reading and in math. The school has never been identified as a "School in Need of Improvement." "They need to maintain that," Vosgien said. "Just because past tests have come back with good results, there's always room for improvement, and we don't want to lose any of that either." Vosgien said the addition of the curriculum coordinator will help to fill the gap left after the board removed the assistant principal position last year and will help to support the teachers. According to Budget Committee Chairwoman Elyse Seeley, the addition of the coordinator represented 14 cents of the 16-cent tax increase. "That was our only wrangling point," she said. "But there are some things worth paying for. Otherwise, they'd have voted it down." Residents also passed Article 2, which approved the increases in salaries and benefits for staff and teachers. The increase totaled an estimated $53,815 for 2012-13 and $57,119 for 2013-14. In year one of the two-year contract, teachers and staff will receive a 1 percent raise. In year two, teachers and staff will receive a 1.5 percent raise. "The teachers have gone a year without a contract and have incurred an increase in retirement contribution, and had no raise in the past year to offset that," Vosgien said. Property taxes for year one will increase 11 cents per $1,000, and taxes for year two will increase by 12 cents. The contract also adds one additional day of non-student contact work. According to Vosgien, the extra day will provide teachers with time to prepare their classrooms before the start of the school year, or will be used at another point in time. |

No order is required. Buy boxes of cookies on the spot! Miss out on the first wave of Girl Scout Cookie sales? Craving Thin Mints and Caramel deLites? Not sure where to find Shortbreads and Peanut Butter Patties? You're in luck. Your search just became as simple as clicking a button. Girl Scouts, such as Brentwood's Troop 657, who sold cookies on Saturday afternoon at the Dierbergs on Eager Road, will be selling cookies at local businesses throughout Eastern Missouri. From big grocery stores like Schnucks and Dierbergs to stores like Petco and Walmart, Girl Scouts will sell cookies through March 18 as part of the second wave of their annual cookie sale. There is no order required; you can buy boxes of cookies on the spot for $3.50 per package. Selling the cookies gives girls a boost in math and business, and is a great learning process. "The girls learn to do math on the fly when they give change," Troop 657's leader, Stephanie Cross, said. "It teaches them about courtesy when they thank the customers and complete a sale. It boosts their confidence and teaches them about salesmanship." Cookie booths are easy to find. Simply point your browser to http://girlscoutcookies.org and enter your zip code to generate a list of locations and times. If you have an iPhone or other Apple device, you can also visit the site to download the cookie finder app, which uses your GPS location to find the closest booth to you. It even comes complete with alerts to let you know when a cookie booth near you is open for business. All proceeds from cookie sales stay within the community to benefit local girls. Troops use the money for everything from field trips to community service projects; troop 657 plans to use their cookie money to take a field trip. The girls vote in May on where they'd like to visit and they make a group decision. They're planning a trip this summer to Camp Fiddlecreek. With these funds, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri can also deliver programs for girls, provide training for adult volunteers and maintain their three local Girl Scout camps. Through the Girl Scout Cookie program, girls develop five essential life skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. It is the largest girl-led business in the world and generates immeasurable benefits for girls and their communities. Girl Scouts have been selling cookies for more than 80 years. In addition to local asparagus, the downtown weekly Brentwood Farmers Market will showcase early strawberries, blueberries and artichokes along with year-round produce staples such as potatoes, carrots and lettuce, starting from 8 a.m. to noon March 31 pending city approval. Each year the event's producer, Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association, moves up the start date of the market earlier in the spring and extends it later into the fall season. The popularity of the Brentwood Farmers Market has driven its extended season, Pacific Coast Regional Manager Greg Pursle said. Out of 70 farmers markets in Northern California, the Brentwood one is in the top 10, he noted. "More people keep coming out and we want to accommodate them," Pursley said. In 2009, the Brentwood Farmers Market started during the second week of May, then it moved to the end of April in 2010 and last year began in early April. During the peak summer produce season, it draws about 3,500 visitors weekly and is the most successful one in East County and beyond, Pursley said. At its Tuesday meeting, the Brentwood City Council will consider extending the season from March 31 through the middle of November. Pacific Coast has recently submitted a temporary useapplication to the city for this extension. "Brentwood has welcomed the Farmers Market with open arms. The support of the residents has been phenomenal," Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor said. "We are known as the agricultural city of Eastern Contra Costa." Recently, the Harris-Teeter-anchored Peartree Village shopping center in Brentwood has been equipped with install Blink® Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The stations join chargers at the Brentwood Library and the city’s Municipal Center, as well as Cracker Barrel restaurants. Regency Center, the owner of Peartree Village, is rolling out the stations as part of The EV Project, a national deployment of commercial and residential charging stations in major U.S. cities and metropolitan areas. The goal of The EV Project is to collect data on electric vehicle use, evaluate the effectiveness of EV charging infrastructure and evaluate revenue systems for commercial and public charging stations. San Francisco-based ECOtality is the project manager of The EV Project and will oversee the installation of commercial and residential charging stations. The project will provide an EV infrastructure to support the deployment of EVs in these key markets. The project is a public-private partnership, funded in part by the U.S. Department of Energy through a federal stimulus grant. To Scott Prigge, senior vice president of national property operations for Regency Centers, the charging stations will “provide an added shopper convenience, demonstrate and encourage a commitment to the environment, and generate a potential future revenue stream.” The company is installing the stations at 19 grocery-anchored and community shopping centers in Arizona, California, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and the District of Columbia. The company will make decisions on future installations based on the demand at these charging stations. “Going forward, Regency will install additional chargers in its portfolio based upon consumer demand, if the pilot program results demonstrate that it makes sound financial sense,” said Mark Peternell, Regency’s vice president of sustainability. Since February, EV drivers have been able to power up at the Cracker Barrel on Mallory Lane, which has two stations. Last year, Brentwood entered into an agreement with ECOtality to install electric vehicle charging stations at the Brentwood Municipal Center on Maryland Way and at the Brentwood Library on Concord Road. With a federal Electric Vehicle Project grant funding up to $4,500 per site, the city’s cost was $2,583 to install the charging stations, which are now in operation. Right now, electric car drivers can plug in for free, but ECOtality will start collecting a usage fee from the sites in the future and split the revenue with the city. This pay model will happen soon but an exact implementation date and fee plan have not been established yet, City Engineer Mike Harris said. |

Brentwood fireworks set for July 14; Franklin and Nolensville still re-planning |

|
Posted by daNd124 on Sun Jul 7 13:17:09 2013, in response to The New Brentwood Thread, posted by LuchAAA on Sun Aug 21 16:33:18 2011. http://www.tennessean.com/article/20130705/WILLIAMSON01/130705009/Brentwood-fireworks-set-July-14-Franklin-Nolensville-still-re-planningIt was one soggy Fourth of July as every official fireworks celebration in Williamson County was cancelled amid an all-day steady rain Thursday. Now the burning question of when patriotic revelers can expect to see the rocket’s red glare is still in flux for a couple of municipalities. Brentwood has already rescheduled their pyrotechnic show for July 14 to coincide with their last Brentwood Concert Series event of the summer at the Eddy Arnold Amphitheater in Crockett Park. The Entice Band will play smooth tunes from Louis Armstrong to the Black Eyed Peas starting at 7 p.m. followed by the fireworks. As for when the postponed Franklin fireworks will be shot off, the city is still settling on a date and should have an answer by the start of next work week. “At the moment, we are looking at a couple of events, we can wrap it around,” said Monique McCullough, Franklin’s public outreach specialist. Originally, Nolensville’s show was supposed to go on rain or shine. But as the previous flood watch turned into a flood warning Thursday morning, organizers had no choice but to cancel the event. The fireworks’ launch site was located in a floodplain and organizers worried that the trucks would have trouble getting in and out of the water-logged, muddy site, said Jana Truman, a member of the Town Events Committee. This is the first time the town has had to postpone the fireworks portion in its seven year history. Nolensville will have fireworks but it’s unlikely that it will be this summer. The committee is looking at several other events they could tag the explosions on to including Patriot’s Day, the Broken Wheel Festival, Veteran’s Day or Labor Day but haven’t settled on an exact day yet. “Unfortunately, the fireworks are on an indefinite suspension. But we anticipate they will happen before the end of the year,” Truman said. |
