I spent the better part of one decade in Hebrew school because I kept getting left back. I had a lot of problems with the Sh'ma, a lot of problems. For some reason, I was unable to properly recite that thing except for the first line and my teachers, especially Miss Komen, kept picking (on) me to stand up in front of the class and sing it and that did not end well. It eventually became a psychological barrier and it was apparent to everyone that it was a lost cause. Did that stop Komen from picking me? No. Did that prevent the students from laughing at me? No. I eventually had to go to Rabbi Halpern's office after school for extra help but that only made matters worse. I was basically out in the wilderness with absolutely no shot. Somehow, in someway, I made it through and became a Bar Mitzvah per se - I even read my Haftorah in Hebrew without the English phonetic help. My life from that point forward has been a downward spiral although my relatively successful Green Bean dish I made from scratch yesterday has at least given me hope for a better and brighter tomorrow. |

I fell in love with those taquerias out there in California - I used to stop at any number of those places and got burritos wrapped in tin foil and other stuff to take home. There were a couple taquerias around the Sunnyvale - Cupertino - Santa Clara area where I lived that had a nice, authentic atmosphere and good service so I'd eat right there. |

Here's a pizzeria in West Hempstead (Hunki's Kosher Pizza) that offers anchovies. I don't know who supervises them:"Hunki's Kosher Pizza is strictly kosher and offers a lot more than just pizza. Pizza lovers have a choice of pizza with onions, peppers, mushrooms, olives, eggplant, broccoli, anchovies and more." L'Bella Kosher Italian Cuisine in Kew Gardens offers anchovies on their pizzas. Kosher Pizza Express on Coney Island Ave. offers anchovies on their pizzas. |

At home I order from the local pizza hut, but when out of town I eat at local places. Pizza isn't really a favorite, but in some small towns they are among the better places if you want something kinda of quick and have a beer and maybe watch TV at the same time. |

I don't think many in NY area even thing "Taco Bell" is Mexican food (we have plenty of Mexican restaurants around to know what "Mexican food" is (although granted, the Southwest does have better of course). But yes, the scenario in theory is correct. "Pizza Hut is to Pizza what Taco bell is to Mexican Food, or McDonalds is to a hamburger". All three of the chain examples are assemblyline, corporate versions of the real foods they represent. It's not about being a "pizza snob". I but it's a chain version of food. I said I "like" having Pizza Hut occasionally, but the experience is quite similar to having Taco Bell instead of real Mexican food. I occasionally go to Taco Bell too, but I know when I go in, I am not having "Mexican Food". It's a corporate assembly line version of whatever they make the outlets sell. It's like going to McDonalds instead of a Bar/Grill for a Cheeseburger. You'll get the same mediocre crappy assemblyline chain store burger any McDonalds you go to. |

I can admit the West Coast has us beat with Mexican food. We are mostly stuck with crappy chain fast food versions of it, and even the non-chain fast food versions of it doesn't come close to what you can get in the SouthWest. You can get real Mexican food here, but you'd have to go to more expensive sit down restaurants to get it, we really don't have great fast food verstions of it like they do in the Southwest. It's pretty similar to the Pizza scenario outside of NY metro. In most places it's either chain pizza or crappy versions of it, even if non-chain. Much like if you want fast food "Mexican" in NY. |

In most small towns outside of NY, and you want Pizza, you HAVE to get the chain version of it, or some not so great mom and pop place that probably isn't even as good as the chain pizza. It's like if in NY you want fast food "mexican", it's crappy Taco Bell, or some not-as-good-as-the-west-coast version of it. |

Actually many smallish towns have independent pizza restaurants. But Pizza Hut is pretty popular. I used to travel to a town that was small small that it didn't even have a McDonalds, BK, or Subway even though i was right off the freeway. Strangely enough one chain that they did have was Pizza Hut. The other was A&W. They had two other restaurants and a couple of bars and that was it fr a town of maybe 2 or 3k. |

Heh, well on Long Island and in the city we do have some real Mexican restaurants too, but they are usually expensive (and while not bad, not quite as good as out west). Also, we don't have many good "fast food" versions of Mexican food (non-chain) like the southwest has infested with.As for Chili's, I don't think they really bill themselves as "Mexican", they don't even have burritos the last time I was there. They are more like a TGI Fridays or Applebees type place with a somewhat hot pepper flair (for lack of a better word), their only close to Mexican thing on their menu is perhaps soft taco platter and chicken fajitas (which you can also get at places like TGI Fridays, etc. That's about it. The rest is the normal chain bar/grill stuff like burgers, steaks, ribs, and sandwiches. They used to have more "Tex-Mex" sort of stuff years back, but the menus gotten more and more like the other bar/grill chains like TGI Fridays. (For the record, TGI Fridays isn't as food as it used to be either). |
