Actually here, you might be ON to something. Given what's been going on in this thread and the fact that I spent better than 15 years in political journalism, figured I'd toss on the hat for a few minutes since I've seen this trick many times before. As it turns out, deLeon is on the INSURANCE committee and is also on the health and labor committees. He's a freshman from 2010 from the San Diego area. He's trying to establish himself as a labor-friendly Hispanic advocate and so this angle is part of his political play. I can only add that after introducing this bill however, he just received some substantial campaign money from Kaiser Permanente and some other insurance companies all of which are in the worker's compensation market. I'll leave it there since I really don't want to waste the time reviewing the specific amounts ... |

It's totally another thing when the means to avoid injury is available and NOT implemented. Fitted sheets have been around for a very long time. Long handled brushes have been around for a very long time. The cost differentials are negligible. There is NO reason on earth why these changes haven't been implemented (fitted sheets cost the same as flat, for example) in "industrial" settings such as hotels long ago, eliminating the need for a law. The argument against these changes is specious. |

There's plenty of reasons why this hasn't been implemented. Fitted sheets are not interchageable, so it requires a whole other inventory. Second, the fitted sheets don't last as long, as the elastic wears out. Third, they aren't as tight on the bed, as after many washings (which hotel sheets are brutally subjected to), loosen up, and don't fit as tight, so they will require almost the same tucking as they get washed over and over. Fourth, you are making it sound like you have to lift the whole mattress up all the time. That's absurd. |

They last as long and are as durable as flat. Industrial grade sheets are different than those you find at BB&B.Lifting a corner of a mattress still requires nearly the same force as lifting the whole thing. Try doing that 120 times, in fairly rapid succession. Scrub your bathroom 20 times and vacuum the floor a same number. |

That's probably how it cam e about to begin with. There has to be a sufficient uproar to get a bill to begin with, support of a number of legislators to pass through committee, and usually bipartisan support to get it passed. So this is a bigger issue than the RWNBs want to make of it. |
