Congresswoman Bachman Gives Up On Supporting the Troops |
|
Posted by Fred G on Sat Feb 5 08:27:32 2011 http://thinkprogress.org/2011/02/04/bachmann-withdraws-cuts/LINK Last week, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) unveiled a plan to cut $400 billion in federal spending, and included a controversial target. The Tea Party favorite proposed freezing the Veterans Affairs Department’s health care spending and cutting veterans’ disability benefits. Her plan sliced $4.5 billion from the VA and reduced 150,000 veterans’ disability compensation and the amount they receive in Social Security Disability Income. Veterans groups blasted the proposal as “totally out of step with America’s commitment to our veterans,” and as something that shows “contempt for American servicemembers’ sacrifices.” Rest of Story at this LINK tsk tsk, I guess there's more to supporting the troops than tying a yellow ribbon around a tree. I'm glad the Congresswoman reversed direction on this. your pal, Fred |

The tea party philosophy is that people should work hard to support themselves. Seeing as these are veterans and not active duty members, the philosophy is that they're being given a handout by the government and that they should work harder for their own health care. The tea party tends to cut areas that they believe as pro-ported handouts. |

The VA doesn't have big defense industry lobbyists. In conservo-speak, "supporting the troops" means giving hundreds of billions to Lockheed Martin for stuff the military doesn't want and doesn't work. Fuck the actual troops and their families. |

The tea party philosophy is that people should work hard to support themselves. They did; they joined the US Armed Services. Seeing as these are veterans and not active duty members, the philosophy is that they're being given a handout by the government and that they should work harder for their own health care. The tea party tends to cut areas that they believe as pro-ported handouts. i.e., screw the troops. I wonder what that will do to enlistment rates.... I gather that you don't actually believe this yourself, but are explaining their mentality. The teabaggers and the Republicans in general espouse a model of twisted self-reliance that when last in full force, during the height of the industrial revolution, you had "scientific" management, the military used to quash worker uprisings, people dying due to chemical exposure, overwork, poverty and even heat and cold waves. Yeah, we don't need to go back to that America. Every bit of scientific evidence flatly contradicts this world view as producing either better economic prosperity or social well-being. (Not that the right-wingers have difficulty arguing with fact.) What's further it seems that the right-wingers are forgetting the basic purpose of civilization: to take care of one another better than we would if we all looked out for ourselves. Espousing a society that is all about looking out for #1 is not the way to a better world by any stretch of the imagination. |

If the US government had really wanted to balance the budget, they should not have enacted the $858 billion Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010, that was passed into law after the November 2010 mid-term elections. Instead, they should have allowed the Bush tax cuts to expire. But failure to act would have been politically unpopular, and in a democracy the top priority of most politicians is to be re-elected. |

And one of the implied contracts about joining the US armed forces is that you will receive good medical care should you be injured. Given the appalling state of individual health care in the US, it’s not unreasonable that veterans should rely on the VA for injury management and rehabilitation. This is not a handout by any stretch of the imagination. |
