The tea party philosophy is that people should work hard to support themselves. They did; they joined the US Armed Services. Seeing as these are veterans and not active duty members, the philosophy is that they're being given a handout by the government and that they should work harder for their own health care. The tea party tends to cut areas that they believe as pro-ported handouts. i.e., screw the troops. I wonder what that will do to enlistment rates.... I gather that you don't actually believe this yourself, but are explaining their mentality. The teabaggers and the Republicans in general espouse a model of twisted self-reliance that when last in full force, during the height of the industrial revolution, you had "scientific" management, the military used to quash worker uprisings, people dying due to chemical exposure, overwork, poverty and even heat and cold waves. Yeah, we don't need to go back to that America. Every bit of scientific evidence flatly contradicts this world view as producing either better economic prosperity or social well-being. (Not that the right-wingers have difficulty arguing with fact.) What's further it seems that the right-wingers are forgetting the basic purpose of civilization: to take care of one another better than we would if we all looked out for ourselves. Espousing a society that is all about looking out for #1 is not the way to a better world by any stretch of the imagination. |
