One Step Forward, Two Steps Back |
|
|
Posted by JayZeeBMT on Mon Jan 3 23:10:35 2011 After President Obama's year-end legislative accomplishments withy the lame-duck Congress before the holiday break, the GOP is all set to begin 2011 with a bang, introducing a House bill to repeal healthcare reform. Although Democrats still control the Senate, and Obama can veto the repeal bill if it gets to his desk, it's something to think about: do we really want to go back to the days when your insurer could drop you when you got sick, deny lifesaving procedures as a cost-cutting measure, or refuse hospitals payment for treatments and medications they had no choice but to deliver?Repealing healthcare reform would be like flattening the tires on the ambulance so it can't reach you while you lay bleeding in the street. Keep in mind that this year, the first of 75 million Baby Boomers become eligible for Medicare--you read that as geriatric care, the most expensive predictable healthcare there is--but Republicans want to strike all the improvements to Medicare and the rest of it. When you are old and need a big-ticket item like a bypass, hip replacement, or TPA therapy, do you really want your elected (GOP) officials leaving you at the mercy of corporate healthcare? Remember, these are the guys, starting with Tricky Dicky Nixon himself, that came up with rescission, capitation, and HMOs... |

They made no secret of all that this was what many of them candidates running were planning to do. Many of them ran on a platform of this. They are just doing what they promised to do when they were running for election. NOT doing what was in a lot of their campaign platforms, would actually be reneging on campaign promises. The People spoke. |

The resolution would call on four key committees to create health care legislation that addresses 12 different goals, to “lower health care premiums through increased competition and choice,” “increase the number of insured Americans,” “protect the doctor-patient relationship,” and “prohibit taxpayer funding of abortions and provide conscience protections of health care providers,” for example. The resolution appears aimed at blunting Democratic criticism that Republicans aren’t serious about enacting solutions to expand health care coverage to millions of uninsured Americans. |

I get the overwhelming impression that the GOP led the People down the garden path on HCR. Every time I'm in the Village, I pass by the most eloquent argument in favor of healthcare reform--the empty, cold, dark hulk of the former St. Vincent's Hospital. STVH was one of the largest, most comprehensive medical institutions in the city, and it was done in by precisely the things the Republicans are trying to bring back.If HCR had been in effect in, say, 2008, STVH would still be saving lives today. During the last election season, I heard not a peep from GOP candidates about how repealing HCR would, in fact, keep our precious hospitals and clinics open, or manage Medicare Part D, which will, in the coming years, be the single biggest payor for prescription drugs in America... |

NO ONE is saying that healtcare reform is not needed. The controversy is against the horror of a bill that the Democrats passed, against the will of the American people, and in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve, sneakily. "We will just have to pass it so we can see what is in it"....Healthcare reform is needed, but "healthcare reform" doesn't have to be synonymous with Pelosi/ObamaCare that was put forth. They are trying to repeal THAT bill, not against reforming HealthCare. |

If the GOP has their way, something like this could happen to YOU:God forbid, one morning, you wake up with horrible crushing substernal chest pains. The EMS crew begins treating you right then and there at the scene. They bundle you off to the hospital, where the doctor takes one look at your EKG and orders a cardiac cath be done on you. You're already $5000 in the hole and more is coming. Your cath reveals a blocked coronary artery, and it is decided you need a bypass. While you're being prepped for surgery, they place you on multiple cardiac and other meds appropriate to your condition. While you are sitting up there in CCU on a morphine drip, the billing department is calling your insurer, who ultimately will decide how much of this treatment they are going to actually pay for. Because your condition is a life-threatening one, the hospital isn't going to wait for your insurer to "authorize" your ambulance trip, ER visit, or any of the lifesaving and stabilizing treatments you've received so far. They are going to wheel you into the OR, knock you out, and do that $250,000 bypass you so desperately need. After you come out of Recovery, and eventually get well enough to be discharged, you'll go home, where, still on ooglobs of meds and outpatient therapy, you'll get the shock that will ultimately kill you. A letter from the hospital will arrive in your mailbox, saying your insurance company has dropped your coverage (rescission!), refuses to pay for your treatment and surgery, and the hospital now wants half a million bucks from you. Your family can bury you in Potters' Field after that... That's what the GOP wants for YOU. |

A majority of Americans don't have a friggin clue what's in the stupid bill other than what the richer than sin talking heads tell them. Of course, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, et. all would be opposed to the bill. These guys are all richer than sin and even if a major catastrophic event happened to them, still wouldn't go bankrupt. The majority of Americans are one major health scare away from bankruptcy and that's what the bill was trying to alleviate.I guess it's ok for people to be forced on the street due to illness, is that what you're saying Chris? I'm glad they are introducing this bill.I also hope they don't pass a bill raising the debt ceiling. That would be awesome. Just think, after getting borrowed $1 trillion dollars in tax cuts for the rich, they will now refuse to authorize that very borrowing. There was never any good reason for the US to have a AAA bond rating. It's about time we have it downgraded. And by an voluntary actual default at that. |
