True ... it's SO much easier to become a teacher. FWIW though, when you go into seminary there isn't all that much dogma taught ... it's assumed that you already know all that. Instead, you learn about OTHER religions and their commonalities and differences, but mostly you learn about the church's politics and how to run a parish.And even back in the "bad old days" if you showed a woodie for ANY reason, you were out. |

What I rejected when I was young, I find somewhat fascinating today. I never wanted the trappings of any religion and grew up that way. Now I find - regardless of the religion, that the rituals are all interesting and stimulating in some way. So much so that at least one Sunday every year you can find me having a vegetarian lunch at the Chuang Yen Monastery in Carmel. |

Indeed ... the hum of Buddhist ceremonies is quite interesting as are the melodic ceremonies of Hindi and several others. You might find the Peace Pagoda in Grafton (Rensselaer county) extremely remarkable. When I was an egg, the nuns kept trying to sell us on the concept that if we set foot in a protestant church (forget even WORSE transgressions, heh) that we would *immediately* be struck by lightning on a clear day and catch fire from God's wrath. Certainly a humorous topic for conversation when I got to Graymoor. :) |

ADNY bought all of it for all the parishes from this winery in Milton (just south of Highland in Ulster county where the POK Bridge lands on the other side) which finally shut down and was sold to another vineyard named KEDEM. Now they peddle those awful grapes as Kosher. :)I always got kick out of knowing my priests when it was pour time, and also being aware of the time. I'm sure you remember the "finger signals" over the chalice when you poured from each vessel. Some priests doing 0-dark-hundred services would wiggle you off quick on the wine and let you fill with water ... by their third mass or so hitting near noon, those fingers would be waving furiously until it was full and then wved off the water. Heh. You know whut I meen. :) |

I can honestly say I never ran into that in my time as a kid and alterboy at St Lukes (138st) back in the mid 60's.In H.S.....it was the Augustine guys at Tolentine. No incidences there either. There were rumors of a couple of priest being seen after hours with females, some of them HS seniors. But...these guys were still in thier 20's and these gal's...well maybe even 18. It was over 30 yrs ago my fiend...so the memories a bit fuzzy. Also there were a couple of lay teachers, who were young, as well, who got it on with some chicks after they graduated.....and none of this bothers me in the least. None of it's child abuse...or even close to it. Now...I don't deny there's perv priest who need to be punished....I ain't seen 'em and I refuse to cast a negative lite on the rest of them. The priest abuse issue was overblown. The problem was the Church's coverup of the incidents that occurred.
