It's actually the same reason that Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize after being in office less than a month.I don't think that (racial-based) affirmative action was the direct cause of that at all, it was the cause of Barack Obama becoming President, but not of being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Rather, his speeches on the campaign trail against President Bush did that. Mind you, I'm sure that a good number of those who voted for Barack Obama to receive the prize wouldn't now vote for him now that they have seen the comparison between their preferences and the man's performance in office. The integrity of that prize is gone for ever because of that absurd occurrence. The integrity of the Nobel Peace Prize was hit long before that, many times. It's the political Nobel and sadly, the one that gets the most attention. The guys who toil for years in medicine, chemistry, literature, economics, and physics, who really deserve the popular recognition rarely ever get it, though the money's not bad at all. |

When you saw a black person in law school did you assume that they didn't really belong there?No; since in fact the standards to stay in are much, much, much less than those needed to get in, and once you're in, you're in just as much as me or anyone else, and your diploma doesn't have an asterisk on it. But having worked admissions committee, I can tell you that there is a very significant bump on the basis of race, as well as, to be sure, pedigree, who you're daddy is and whether he's donated money, etc. I have little doubt that Mr. Obama's verbal - I have no basis on which to judge his quantitative reasoning skills - standardized test scores were fairly high, but that alone doesn't secure admission to Columbia College or HLS; his race no doubt helped with the hard last mile. He finished magna cum laude at HLS, so he's bright. But would he have been there in the first place if not for affirmative action? |

But without affirmative action getting him that foot in the door, his spot at Columbia, at Harvard, at Chicago, to cultivate his circle of friends and associates, etc, he would never become Senator from Illinois, let alone President. Plenty more people who apply for admission to HLS are capable of doing the work there well or very well than are actually admitted. |
