When you saw a black person in law school did you assume that they didn't really belong there?No; since in fact the standards to stay in are much, much, much less than those needed to get in, and once you're in, you're in just as much as me or anyone else, and your diploma doesn't have an asterisk on it. But having worked admissions committee, I can tell you that there is a very significant bump on the basis of race, as well as, to be sure, pedigree, who you're daddy is and whether he's donated money, etc. I have little doubt that Mr. Obama's verbal - I have no basis on which to judge his quantitative reasoning skills - standardized test scores were fairly high, but that alone doesn't secure admission to Columbia College or HLS; his race no doubt helped with the hard last mile. He finished magna cum laude at HLS, so he's bright. But would he have been there in the first place if not for affirmative action? |
