Very well put in light of what Robertson states:From the CNN.COM: iReport — Telediabolist Pat Robertson claims Haitians visited the epic disaster they’re dealing with on themselves by making a pact with the devil to gain independence from France two hundred years ago. That imbecility might even trump Falwell’s classic bit of hate stating 9/11 was visited on the USA because we had turned our backs on God. Best defense a CBN mouthpiece has offered for Robertson is that he didn’t say the disaster was ‘God’s wrath.’ No, just that God allowed it to happen and Haitians are devil-worshippers. Ironic, that a man who’s built his career (and fortune) on that gentle carpenter from two millennia ago, doesn’t know the first thing about his message of love. Haitians need help. Food, water, materiale. Anything and everything but hate. We can pray as well. Something Robertson knows nothing about. |

Natural disasters and other tragedies don't necessarily contradict the supposition that God is good; such also occurred in Biblical times (In some of those cases, natural disasters were one way God exacted judgment against a people). Put another way, that God Himself is not evil does not mean that evil itself cannot exist; many Christians (myself included) also acknowledge the existence of Satan. This isn't to say that Satan (or demons) are the sole cause of evil; people are capable of deciding to do things that one might judge to be "good" or "evil" (of course we didn't cause the quake in Haiti, but I speak in general terms). my blog |

Posted by streetcarman1 on Mon Jan 18 15:40:24 2010, in response to Re: Robertson: Hate and Haiti, posted by LuchAAA on Mon Jan 18 11:53:26 2010. From today's NYTIMES.COM:Update | 1:49 p.m. A review of French press coverage of the disaster on the English-language Web site of Radio France Internationale notes: Le Monde’s front page is given over to an interview with the Haitian novelist, Dany Laferričre, who was in Port-au-Prince at the moment of the earthquake. He wants people to stop talking about Haiti as if it was cursed, suggesting that the island’s population was, in some sense, being punished for a past crime. And he wonders about the identification of those who took food from destroyed shops as “looters”, saying that, when people risk their lives, crawling through ruins in search of something to eat and drink, they are motivated by need, not by greed. The Guardian’s Lizzy Davis points out that the writer said the use of the term “cursed” was unfair: “This is an insulting word which implies that Haiti has done something wrong and it’s paying for it.” According to a translation by Ms. Davis, he added: It would be better to talk about this incredible energy that I’ve seen, these men and women who are helping each other with courage and dignity. Although the city has been partially destroyed and the state has been decapitated, the people are staying, working and living. So please, stop using the word curse. Haiti has done nothing… This is a catastrophe which could happen anywhere. French-speakers — or those willing to trust Google Translate for a rough idea of what was said — can read the complete interview with Mr. Laferričre on Le Monde’s Web site. On Friday, Mr. Laferričre told Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper: “It felt unreal. Because it was too much. This time it felt like something that surpassed all the misfortune that has stricken Haiti until now.” He added, “This time, we hit the bottom.” |
