God damn it! More bad news :((( |

|
Posted by Peter Rosa on Sun Jun 12 18:37:02 2005 An article in today's Times about increasing development on the West Side contained this little "gem":Hotel developers say they are also worried that there has been little movement on the Javits expansion in the six months since it was authorized by the state legislature. How typical. It's bad enough that New York is saddled with the uselessly small Javits Center, now the expansion plans are stalled. My LIRR/NYCT blog |

Bad news for you, good news for those of us who live in NYC.I'd rather have land near Javits developed as expensive condos or office buildings that increase the NYC real estate tax base, rather than as a state owned facility that pays no taxes but uses my taxes. Manhattan is just too expensive for certain uses. Convention center and football stadium are two of them, though with the convention center it's more the cost of trucking stiff there that's the killer. After all, it's not as though developers can't think of lots of productive things to do with land in Manhattan. |

It totally misses the point, by its failure to address the prestige factor. Having a mega-center, even one that operates at a loss, "puts a city on the map" and surely helps it attract new businesses. New York, with its high unemployment, has to be bold when it comes to taking such initiatives. My LIRR/NYCT blog |

A little work on "worker's comp" and "labor department" might make a crimp in that - New York has the *FINEST* corporate laws in the nation - a literal license to print money and nothing much can happen to you. It's INSURANCE (and the causes behind it) along with the politicians ALWAYS looking for yet ANOTHER shakedown that have New York in the toilet as far as that goes. And the OTHER killer is ENERGY costs ... But a corporation with a SERIOUS intent to do busines can find no better legal protection than being a NEW YORK corporation. Only problem is we don't require those corporations to RESIDE here. If only our lawgivers pulled that *ONE* number, problem SOLVED! :( |

You make the assumption that companies relocating to NYC would decrease the unemployment rate.New York's official unemployment rate is not that high. One can argue (and I believe you have) that there are many other people not included in that figure who are also unemployed. These include people on disability, people who lack basic education/intelligence and people who simply choose not to work because they can do better "living off the system". New businesses coming to the city would not do anything to reduce that type of unemployment. |

My understanding is that the cost of workers compensation insurance is a large factor in the disappearance of upstate jobs. New businesses coming to the city would not do anything to reduce that type of unemployment. Some of these "labor force nonparticipants" are beyond all hope. I have no doubt, however, that many of them are on the margins and can be reintroduced to the working world if the job market is sufficiently strong. Let's say, for instance, that economic growth gets to a point at which the starting salary for retail or fast-food work in the city is at $10 per hour. Thousands of disabled people will experience sudden miracle recoveries. Off-the-books work such as street peddling or even panhandling will lose its advantage over legitimate work. Employers will lose much of their bargaining power and will find themselves with no choice but to train uneducated and unskilled people wherever possible. In making these predictions, I'm guided by what happened in Connecticut during the economic boom of the late 1980's. Labor shortages were so actue that entry-level wages sometimes reached double the federal minimum wage. Desparate for enough help, employers tried to convince retirees to come back to work, recruited mentally retarded and other disabled people when possible, offered child care in attempts to recruit housewives, and so on. True, New York is a far larger labor market, and almost certainly has a higher percentage of "labor force nonparticipants," but that shouldn't make it impossible for a Connecticut-style situation to occur given sufficient economic growth. And how is Alabama any different? In very rough terms... When buying Workers Comp insurance you pay a rate based on your payroll and the type of business you have. The rates vary by state based on the different benefit levels in the states and the underlying medical costs in the particular state. In Alabama, the rate for a certain type of firm might be as low as 1/2 that of the rate in New York. When you combine the lower rate with the lower payroll costs in a state like Alabama, you could be looking at a reduction in Workers Comp costs of 60%. |

Apparently a WHOLE lot more - that important age group, 18-35 actually BELIEVES this qwap ... and SALUTES it at the polls. "Unions are evil" and "damned liberals" ... ah well, the Laissez fairy's got a nice stiff, pink wand. :(Wasn't always like this, this whole "community stupidity" ... Day in the Life of Joe Middle-Class Republican A TvNewsLIES Reader contribution. By John Gray Cincinnati, Ohio - July - 2004 Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised. All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor. Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn't think he should loose his home because of his temporary misfortune. Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression. Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time. Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republican's would still be sitting in the dark) He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home. He turns on a radio talk show, the host's keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn't tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees, "We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I'm a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have".
