13 Year Old Suspended From School For Hugging |
|
Posted by Train Dude on Wed Nov 7 18:05:35 2007 Talk about political correctness running amok;MASCOUTAH, Ill. (AP) Two hugs equal two days of after-school detention for 13-year-old Megan Coulter. She's an eighth-grader at Mascoutah Middle School, east of St. Louis. She received the punishment for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection. She served the first suspension yesterday, and plans to serve the second today. Megan says she was just giving two friends a hug goodbye for the weekend. But School District Superintendent Sam McGowen says he thinks the penalty is fair. He says school administrators were following the policy contained in the student handbook. Megan's parents plan to ask the school board to consider making the policy more specific in what is considered a display of affection. No need to check this with snopes as the report is accurate! http://www.wjbc.com/wire2/news/08754_HuggingpunishWEB_114025.htm |

Sam McGowan should be fired and barred from working in any school system ever again. He is a shame to our society and should not be in a position of power. If America had balls, it would end zero tolerance policies. Funny that we never hear of these coming out of the rest of the first world :(. |

Well, there are how many thousands of school superintendents in the US?Assuming a bell curve, some will be brilliant, most will be average in ability, and some will be low-grade morons who, if they jumped out a window to commit suicide, would have to stop to ask for directions halfway to the ground. This isn't PC. it's thought-control!It's not bad enough that after school, they make you scared shitless to even talk to the opposite sex at work or else you'd get fired. How many fraternization policies and meetings do these companies have to put on everyyear. But now we have to get 'em while they're young. I had a meeting one time, and I shit you not, the HR manager suggested that you just not talk to people in the office, because you may make a joke or comment, and someone could overhear you, get offended, and you'd get in trouble! But I should get into the GOP public versus private debate here. Where they go it's okey for a company to ban smoking, but not the gov't as your employer. As retarded as that sounds, I think this should apply to this story. Is the pregnancy rate at this school through the roof or something for this type of policy? |

I saw this young girl on CNN last night and the school did warn students in a general assembly, but not this girl specifically about the policy. The girl brought up another assembly where students were told "hugs not drugs" as evidence of the schools inconsistency.Interestingly it's the second offense that gets you suspended. They counted each of her successive hugs as 1st and 2nd offenses even though one was right after the other. The school principal mentioned something nonsensical about hugs leading to pregnancy. |

What makes it so special?Because childbirth is also a medical procedure, however the consequences of childbirth are more severe. If anything, parental consent should be required if a girl fails to get an abortion. A parent has no right to force his/her daughter to have a child and raise it for 18 years. |

I should also add that especially among teenagers, the medical risks for childbirth are greater than those for an abortion, so failure to get an abortion is placing the young woman at risk. A young girl should not have to have her life or health placed in danger because of her parents religious beliefs, with which she may not agree. |

Absolutely correct.Abortions, liuke any medical procedure, entail certain risks (there are risks if you come to me with a cut finger and I suture it for you). But in over 99% of cases, these risks are minimal and have no adverse long term consequences. |

A minor child is equally at risk when he/she goes to an emergency room for treatment yet that treatment is delayed while the medical staff try to contact the parents. I still don't see the difference. There is also the matter of financial responsibility. Parents should not be held in any way financially responsible for treatment they did not authorize. If the child paid cash from her own source of funds (begging, part time job, etc) I might reconsider my position. |

"A minor child is equally at risk when he/she goes to an emergency room for treatment yet that treatment is delayed while the medical staff try to contact the parents."False statement. The Emergency Room will NOT wait for parents if there is a ligfe-threatening injury. Stabilizing the patient and giving treatment will occur under the doctrine of implied consent. That treatment will occur even if the parents don't want it if it is necessary to save the child's life. "Parents should not be held in any way financially responsible for treatment they did not authorize." If it is necessary to treat the child in opposition to the parent's wishes, the state will step in. |

I still don't see the difference. As Ron said, this is false. No ER will put a life at risk while they wait for the parents. There is also the matter of financial responsibility. Parents should not be held in any way financially responsible for treatment they did not authorize. So should they instead be held financially responsible for the child that the young woman would then have to raise in the absence of an abortion? If you don't want to take responsibility for the mistakes your children will make, don't have children. If the child paid cash from her own source of funds (begging, part time job, etc) I might reconsider my position. In New York, abortion is covered by Medicaid. This should be the case in every state. |

I am not for fully socialized medicine. I feel that the government should cover basic care and stuff that is necessary under some circumstances, but optional care should be covered by private insurance. We're in a healthcare crisis that has to be fixed somehow. |
