Travel to Cape Town? Not from New York. |
|
|
Posted by Peter Rosa on Sat Jan 10 11:39:35 2026 With its natural beauty Cape Town is the main tourist destination in South Africa, not to mention the country’s most stable and safest city. If you want to go there from New York, however, you’re out of luck. Delta Air Lines serves Cape Town but as is the case with Brussels, New York is deemed unworthy of direct service. You have to connect in Atlanta. While United Airlines flies nonstop from Newark to Cape Town that’s of little meaning to New Yorkers who consider New Jersey as remote as North Dakota. |

I know I should not speak for the bored I meant to write board but there is an exception to every rule. So it is these seemingly endless aviation posts will not get you any closer to the rarefied air of the "List of Aviators" unless the LuchAAA requires that an unanticipated and essential slot be filled in magna festinatione. You've made your point, again and again, and we get it.Note to Self: You do not have to click on posts you find insufferable including those by cortelyounext (he/zie/them). |

United has Asia flights from Newark that they can rotate South Africa aircraft onto. |

What is undeniable is that New York’s importance in the airline world is diminishing. Even if you disregard Cape Town, as Delta never operated nonstop flights to there from New York, there’s still the airline’s discontinuance of Brussels service. THAT is a very different story and actually has gotten some media attention. As I’ve mentioned before, Brussels is unlike most other European destinations as it’s oriented more toward business than leisure travelers. There aren’t many tourist draws, and it wouldn’t surprise me if many US tourists who go there are doing so as add-on day trips while visiting Amsterdam or Paris. But it is a major business destination, especially because it’s the EU headquarters city. The fact that it no longer merits nonstop service from New York means that either it or New York are declining in importance, and my money’s on New York. By the way, it is noteworthy that no other airline has announced replacement service from New York to Brussels. Not that there are many likely candidates: Brussels Airlines has a small fleet and probably is limited to its single daily nonstop, American Airlines only cares about Philadelphia, Jet Blue is shifting its transatlantic service to Boston, and United Airlines only cares about Newark. |

The safety, or lack thereof, of Cape Town is completely beside the point. What matters is that New York, unlike Atlanta or Newark, does not merit service. |

So far American has announced only one new European flight from New York, to Edinburgh, and it’s just seasonal. Philadelphia got two new ones, Prague and Budapest, though granted they’re seasonal as well. Note that neither of these cities has any nonstop flights from New York at all. |

BRU is dominated by Star Alliance because SN has its hub there. Why should DL devote resources to it when it can funnel traffic via AMS or CDG instead? If you think "most European destinations" are oriented towards leisure travelers, I have a bridge to sell you. Business travelers subsidize the low airfares that the rest of us pay. Budapest, which is being discussed elsewhere in this thread, is a "leisure destination." London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam (among others) are not. |

There aren’t many tourist draws, and it wouldn’t surprise me if many US tourists who go there are doing so as add-on day trips while visiting Amsterdam or Paris.I agree, so it makes sense to focus on getting those tourists to Amsterdam (2 Delta flights from JFK per day) and to Paris (also 2 Delta flights from JFK per day) where they probably want to stay. I wouldn't want one of those four flights being cut merely to say an additional destination is being served. As far as JFK being diminished in relevance, I'll believe that when I stop waiting 30+ minutes on taxiways for our turn to take off and/or 30+ minutes upon landing on return waiting for the gate to become unoccupied. |

I would imagine that nobody wants to change planes at JFKGenerally true. But if you're traveling from a smaller northeast airport (say, Albany, Bradley, Providence) to Europe it might be your best choice. Far better than changing in Atlanta if that is your alternate choice. |
