What is undeniable is that New York’s importance in the airline world is diminishing. Even if you disregard Cape Town, as Delta never operated nonstop flights to there from New York, there’s still the airline’s discontinuance of Brussels service. THAT is a very different story and actually has gotten some media attention. As I’ve mentioned before, Brussels is unlike most other European destinations as it’s oriented more toward business than leisure travelers. There aren’t many tourist draws, and it wouldn’t surprise me if many US tourists who go there are doing so as add-on day trips while visiting Amsterdam or Paris. But it is a major business destination, especially because it’s the EU headquarters city. The fact that it no longer merits nonstop service from New York means that either it or New York are declining in importance, and my money’s on New York. By the way, it is noteworthy that no other airline has announced replacement service from New York to Brussels. Not that there are many likely candidates: Brussels Airlines has a small fleet and probably is limited to its single daily nonstop, American Airlines only cares about Philadelphia, Jet Blue is shifting its transatlantic service to Boston, and United Airlines only cares about Newark. |
