Is it Still Appropriate to Wish Someone “Merry Christmas”?

Posted by Mitch45 on Fri Dec 26 09:36:48 2025

Asking for etiquette reasons.

Christmas is technically over but, from what I understand, the Christmas season isn’t over until Advent in early January (hence “The 12 Days of Christmas” song). However, I am sure that many Christians don’t really know this.

So my question is: is it still appropriate to wish someone a Merry Christmas or does it just sound dumb?

I would like to know this also.

106.7 is still doing Christmas music today, so I think yes?

I don't often hear "Merry Christmas" after maybe December 26th.

Advent has 4 Sundays and ends on December 24th (that is, the start of Advent is the Sunday 3 weeks before the last Sunday before Christmas).

The "12 days of Christmas" end on Epiphany, traditionally January 6th but now celebrated by the Catholic Church on the first Sunday in January. Not sure what the Episcopalians do about Epiphany.

And of course various Orthodox Christians still use the Julian calendar and so Christmas is delayed by about 11 days or so.

I'd usually say "How was your Christmas" or "Hope you had a nice Christmas"

As for playing Christmas music past Christmas, many radio stations are doing so up until New Years. Christmas music is a tremendous ratings/revenue draw for radio stations. Thats why each year it seems that radio stations are starting to go wall to wall Christmas music earlier and earlier. Usually it starts the week of Thanksgiving.
It wouldnt surprise me that years from now, some radio stations will start right after labor day!

I wouldn't say "Have a Merry Christmas" anymore since Christmas isn't still on its way but I would still stay "Merry Christmas" since most formalized calendars in Christianity would classify it as having begun Dec. 24 at night (or Dec. 25 as the first full day) and going at least until January 6th. So that's how I do it.

Just like if a couple gets married I wouldn't say "Congratulations on your engagement" once they're already married but I would still stay "Congratulations" well after the wedding.

Sorry, of course the 12th day is January 5th.

I was referencing something else now associated with that date.

And this after you wished everyone exactly that?

Do you suffer from multiple personality disorder?

Ah, pardon. I meant Epiphany, not Advent.

As a "lapsed Catholic", I couldn't tell ya! If you wished me Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah I would react the same, knowing that it's coming from a positive place.
