Is it Still Appropriate to Wish Someone “Merry Christmas”?

Asking for etiquette reasons.

Christmas is technically over but, from what I understand, the Christmas season isn’t over until Advent in early January (hence “The 12 Days of Christmas” song). However, I am sure that many Christians don’t really know this.

So my question is: is it still appropriate to wish someone a Merry Christmas or does it just sound dumb?
