Musk reinstates MTG’s Twitter account

Posted by Olog-hai on Thu Nov 24 06:30:57 2022, in response to Guess who’s back, back again, posted by Spider-Pig on Sun Nov 20 03:32:27 2022.

Associated Press

Elon Musk’s Twitter reinstates Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

Elon Musk’s Twitter has reinstated the personal account of far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, which was banned in January for violating the platform’s COVID misinformation policies.

The Georgia Republican’s reinstatement comes after Musk over the weekend reinstated the account of former President Donald Trump, who was banned in the aftermath of the deadly Jan. 6 riots on the Capitol in 2021. Twitter — at the time — feared there was a risk of further incitement to violence if Trump were allowed to remain on the platform. Trump himself has said he won’t return to Twitter and as of Monday had not tweeted since the reinstatement, although he also hasn’t deleted his account.

Musk apparently based his decision to allow Trump back on the site on an unscientific Twitter poll he posted on his timeline. There appeared to be no such poll for Greene’s account.

Earlier, Musk said he would not make major decisions about content or restoring banned accounts before setting up a “ content moderation council ” with diverse viewpoints. Neither Twitter nor Musk have announced the existence of such a council. Twitter did not respond to a message for comment on Monday.

Musk has frequently expressed his belief that Twitter had become too restrictive. Before the U.S. midterm elections this month, he urged his “independent-minded” Twitter followers to vote Republican.

One account Musk has said he won’t allow back on Twitter is that of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who was banned in 2018 for abusive behavior.

“My firstborn child died in my arms. I felt his last heartbeat,” Musk tweeted Sunday in response to calls for Jones’ reinstatement. “I have no mercy for anyone who would use the deaths of children for gain, politics or fame.”

Jones was sued by victims’ families for promoting false conspiracy theories about the Sandy Hook school massacre. Judgements against him have totaled $1.44 billion.

"...and was perceived to be anti-minority (this is debatable, though)."

It certainly is debatable. Just to think that race hustler Al Sharpton gave Trump praise for his minority hiring practices within his construction companies. This coming from a guy who would just as soon spit on white people as talk to them, I'd say its quite an accomplishment on Trump's part.

There is not conclusive evidence that it did happen, nor that it didn't happen.

Based on the general sanity of Post commenters, my opinion is that it's more likely than not that the post and the suspension happened. Naturally there is not the slightest evidence, if the suspension happened, that Musk caused it.

This has little to do with his administration, though. Although even if it wasn’t bigoted against blacks doesn’t mean it wasn’t bigoted against anyone else. The so-called “Muslim ban” and the family separation policy stand out.

And then his first AG was Jefferson Beauregard Sessions.

Based on reading Elon Musk's tweets over the last few months, I think that is extremely unlikely to have happened. That's the type of moderating that he despises. The joke is obviously satire and can't be confused with being true.

I'd estimate that there's less than a 0.001% chance that anyone was ever banned from Twitter for that joke either now or pre-Musk. I'm not ruling out that someone who posted that joke was banned for some other reason.

The "Muslim ban" (BTW which I disagreed with this broad brush approach) was knee jerk reaction to 9/11.

Family separation happens when a parent is in custody and the kids are not. Normal procedure practiced by law enforcement worldwide. When daddy is arrested with his kids in NYC, daddy gets locked up, kids get "separated" and go to a relative or social services. Kids do not go to jail with him.
Same thing at the border. Daddy gets arrested with his kids for illegal entry, kids get separated and don't get locked up for what daddy did.

9/11 had been 15 years earlier. The Patriot Act was a reaction to 9/11. The “Muslim Ban” was just red meat to his base.

This family separation was not done prior to Trump. And children remained separated from their parents for years. It was a form of kidnapping.

And these people were seeking asylum. Something that remained legal for all of Trump’s regrettable administration.

The Sullivan v NY Times decision isn't quite as broad as that.

For example, Sarah Palin was able to sue the NY Times (the judge didn't dismiss the case out of hand); she just didn't convince the jury that the Times had acted with "malice."

Isn't that what free speech is all about?

Speech for the purpose of influencing other people's conduct can have restrictions. For example, Sam Bankman-Fried is discovering it's not free speech to say "Hand over your money to me and I will invest it in cryptocurrency for you" when the statement isn't actually true.

(I am of course ignoring the issue that private entities are free to censor speech as much as they want, just like Musk is doing now.)

I only support government "censorship" when the speech is of the SBF type. Do you think financial fraud ought to be speech that cannot be punished?

Meanwhile, it looks like Republicans in Texas want to make information about abortion pills into prohibited speech.
