Sniffing dogs are bullshit.

Cops like to get people out of the car for reasons I stated. Another reason is to get away from a dashcam if one is recording.

Disagree about your reading of #2 and #3. It can also be used during an ambient air sniff outside of the vehicle. You don’t need some driver to floor it and run over dog and its handler.

What should they have done?

For starters, the police officers should have called for their supervisor.

If they were worried about Mr. Owensby fleeing while waiting for the supervisor to arrive, they could have asked him to turn off the engine, place the keys on the dashboard and his hands on the steering wheel.

You don’t need some driver to floor it and run over dog and its handler.

One does not need to forcibly remove a driver from a car to make the car immobile. Turning off the ignition and placing the keys in plain sight on the dashboard is usually sufficient.

As someone who was a member of a large metropolitan police department, I can speak from experience. The police DO NOT have to call for a supervisor merely because a person wants them to. If the police themselves want to, or are unsure what to do, or if the specific job calls for it, then one can be requested, but it's up to the police to do so, not the guy on the street.

Everyone has a better plan. The police wanted him out of the vehicle, so what good would that have done?

Surprisingly, I actually agree with you here.

While it is good professional practivce to have a supervisor respond to the scene if a person requests it, it's not a rulebook requirement.

However, it's also true that talking one's way out of being arrested is impossible. Once a cop gets it into his or her head that you're getting locked up, that's exactly what will happen. Nothing you can say or do will change that.

Are you denying he is paraplegic?

Let's assume he really is paraplegic, and went into this drug house. Let's assume he's an addict and was going to buy drugs.

So if the police observed him enter and exit the drug house, they also observed that he was seriously disabled.

So now where is the justification in dragging him out of his car? If they know he was in the house they know he was disabled.

Right, I'm not addressing whether he needed to be or legally could be removed from the car.

I'm just saying that if the cops saw him enter and exit the drug house then they deliberately used an inhumane method to remove him from the car.

AlM's question is valid, though...if the cops observed him entering and exiting the house, then they saw him being assisted and out of his car, too. Moreover, as a paraplegic, his driver license would show hand-operated controls as a restriction. So, how come the cops were suddenly unaware of this when they stopped him?

Turning off the ignition and placing the keys in plain sight on the dashboard is usually sufficient. In the current cars, (keyless ignition), if the car doors are closed, the car can be started if the key is inside the car, with the push button..Proximity key..

So with this type of setup, the best thing for the police to do is get the key from the driver, and walk away from the car, far enough so the key cannot be detcted.
