There was an article in the paper recently about the cost of the carts. They never seem to get more expensive.In some cities, there are people who make money just rounding up stray carts that aren't anywhere near the stores, and returning them. There's a bounty on each one. |

Do you know how often I have been to Aldi with about 8 carts chained together in the parking lot because someone took the $1.75 in quarters from them. It was especially noticible on inclement weather days. That said, I have even been guilty of not redeeming my quarter o casionally at Aldi's, and it boiled down to when my son was very young, and wasn't going to leave him in the car just to go back to the store with my my cart just to save a quarter |

The left uses "single parent" as a euphemism for welfare mothers rather than a term for those who are rendered so by deaths in the family, or just parents traveling with kids but without the spouse. Yup; you're turning into an empty space, two spaces from the store front, and yech! there's a damn cart that was left right in the middle of the space.I have to put the car in neutral, get out and move it to the corner, where the parking lines intersect; still close to other cars' bumpers/fenders; but positioning it so hopefully it is not extremely close to the other cars. On windy days I'll take the extra minute and move it to the fenced in cart corral, a row or maybe two over. It's a pain on those days, but somehow I can't not do it. And no I'm not perfect - when I'm in a hurry, I don't do this exactly, just try to keep it out of the way as best I can. |

When I first moved to LA (1976), my apartment building usually had about 3-4 carts in the building (they stayed in the hallways). Came in handy bringing stuff up from the subterrean (sp?) parking to my 3rd floor apartment (that is, when the damn elevator was working) Most were from a small supermarket down the street. Of course, it was illegal to remove them from the store property, but people did it anyway. Occasionally, they would be abandoned on the street, and there was some guys who would drive around in pickup trucks and retrieve them, and the stores would pay them for getting them (I guess a certain amout per cart) |
