There are a number of common causes for that problem. Before you spend any money and replace the phone, is there a point of demarcation (think first jack) that you can plug in a regular line powered (not speaker or wireless phone) with nothing else plugged in the house? (I have all kinds of test sets, meters, and the like, but I'm 3000 miles away..)

Are you sure it's on your end and not phone company's end?

Certainly a possibility. That was the essence of why I suggested plugging in a line powered (not plug in in or wireless base) phone at the first demarcation, with everything else towards the house open.

I had a buzz on my line and called Verizon and they came and changed my copper to fiber optics which cured it. The only problem was fiber optics needs electricity so if there's a power outage I don't have any service. They said they would send me a battery backup for emergencies but that was over a year ago and I still don't have it.

Verizon is aggressively moving to decommission copper everywhere. They've done it a piece at a time in some areas (especially where the had previously installed fiber in a neighborhood for fios, and whole wire centers at a time (mine is scheduled for 4q this year) In those areas all service is shifted, the copper is abandoned, and the C) switches are decommissioned. All service is moved to newer "softswitches" In many areas if you have an outside plant problem in copper, they will not fix it and transition to fiber. Landlines are a tariffed service, you can also get digital voice bundled with fios, that may be cheaper, but is an unregulated service. They are supposed to provide an 8 hour battery unit for the ONT with landline service, the current ones take 12 D batteries and are your responsibility to buy if they go bad. There won't be much copper left in Verizon territory for much longer.

REPLACING SPEAKER PHONE AND CORD

Is this a copper landline phone with no power attachment?

The phone company provides it's own power on its copper wires to power any of its small equipment like speakerphones. They use lots of batteries at their central office to provide 48 vdc to filter out any ac and provide continuous power, should the need to change for the power company's power to local diesel generators in case of a power failure. Even the ring power is pulsed dc.

If you are using a third party phone and/or speakerphone, it's likely they get their power from the wall outlet. Any foreign telephone equipment must have a digital access arrangement (DAA) that protects the phone company line from any equipment attached to it. That DAA should filter out any 60 Hz hum.

Actually ring is slow cycle AC usually 20/30 hz...in a traditional tel set, the
capacitor allows the AC "through" and the phone rings, but "blocks" the dc so when on hook, the CO has no loop through the coil of the bell which would cause steady ROH condition if the cap weren't there.
