I'm an advocate of calling place name (and trying to pronounce them) as they're pronounced locally: Koln not Cologne; Moskva not Moscow; Beijing not Peking or Peiping (I go back a bit); Deutschland not Germany; Munchin nor Munich; New York not Nueva York.I obviously make some leeway for the unavailability of umlauts and such, but at least we get some idea of how these names are said. I mean my wife can pronounce most German and my daughter Cyrillic Russian but most people shouldn't have to go to language class just to pronounce some damn hurricane. I would like them to adopt the (new when I was in the service) international alphabet. At that time able baker charlie became alpha bravo charlie. So this is hurricane India-20. |

I don’t agree with this and think that we should call places what we want when speaking our own language. Consequently, I’m bitter over “Iran” and especially “Myanmar.” The latter is an interesting case because the Burmese government based its spelling on the rules of Received Pronunciation (British English), so the R is supposed to be silent. But i don’t use the silent R except when I say the word “billionaire.”I think the phonetic alphabet should be adopted for all purposes. I mean that we should teach it as the name of the letters to children instead of “ay bee cee.” The major reason is that I’m sick of saying “S as in Sierra” over the phone. |

Beijing not Peking or Peiping I'm no fan of hanyu pinyin, but 北平, Peiping (or Beiping) was the older name, literally meaning "northern peace" or (in context) "northern plains". The city's name varied between that and 北京 (Beijing) from the 14th century down to ours about four times or so. I would like them to adopt the (new when I was in the service) international alphabet. At that time able baker charlie became alpha bravo charlie Thank NATO for that. The Navy apparently used "Apples, Butter, Charlie, Duff, Edward" in their version. The old version was "Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog, Easy, Fox, George, How, Item, Jig, King, Love, Mike, Nan, Oboe, Peter, Queen, Roger, Sugar, Tare, Uncle, Victor, William, X-ray, Yoke, Zebra" (the ones I underlined carried over to the NATO system). |

I regularly have to service non-Native-English speakers and have to hear and speak usernames or keywords letter-by-letter. If I've got a difficult case understanding or being understood, I'll just say "I'll use the phonetic alphabet, OK?" and I just use the names, no "as in" needed, and I almost never have a problem, sierra papa india delta echo romeo dash papa india golf.More than once I had a caller spell what I think is "V" and I'll say "V as in Victor" and they'll say "No! V as in Vebra." Yes I know that Zulu is the correct word but I don't expect them to know. |

The French have never gotten over that the lingua franca passed from French to English.Even right after World War II scholarly people (at least the older ones) still understood and wrote French. Nabokov had the professorial Humbert Humbert use quite a number of French phrases in Lolita. If you don't know them or don't have annotations, you miss a lot of the book, especially the humor. |

It is a story of obsession and often painful. If you want to read it to get off, you'd be very disappointed. The only nearly erotic part of it is when he describes his explorations with a 14-year-old [IIRC] when he was the same age. He's disappointed and she dies [disease, not him] and that breaks his heart. But even in that Nabokov puts in barely-masked satire. The girl's name is Annabelle Leigh. And she lived by the sea. Get it? |
