I don’t agree with this and think that we should call places what we want when speaking our own language. Consequently, I’m bitter over “Iran” and especially “Myanmar.” The latter is an interesting case because the Burmese government based its spelling on the rules of Received Pronunciation (British English), so the R is supposed to be silent. But i don’t use the silent R except when I say the word “billionaire.”I think the phonetic alphabet should be adopted for all purposes. I mean that we should teach it as the name of the letters to children instead of “ay bee cee.” The major reason is that I’m sick of saying “S as in Sierra” over the phone. |
