That picture is just before he gets into a jeep and says "run me up the hill son", the last line of the movie, not counting the singing.

That's a bit short-sighted. Adolf declared war on us at the end of 1941.

Prior to Germany declaring war on the US, the US was hunting and destroying German Submarines. A defacto state of war existed prior to Decemberv11, 1941.

This is what I mis Sarge when I'm off the boardfor even one day. On June 6th, 1944, we got a big break on the landing as well as a kick in the ass as well. The break? Hitler thought the invasion was a ruse, that the big attack would come along the narrower area between England and France---Calais, and he kept two crack armoned divisions back for the "real invasion. Good for us because the Germans had 57 divisions in France and could have possibly driven us into the sea if they had used the strength they had. They didn't. The kick in the pants was Eisenhower, in my opinion a very good President but a totally shitty general. He had Omar Bradley and British Gl. Bernard Montgomery to lead the attack, and we spend close to two months slogging over the hedgerows gaining inches and feet instead of miles. Meanwhile our best general, George S. Patton was marooned in England because t hey they thought the Nazis wouldn't commit their best forces in NOrmandy because the real attack would be led by Patton.

That may seem smart to some but dumb to me because as soon at GSP was put in charge of the Third Army he took his forces west, south and mostly east and roared through France until he was stupidly stopped because he couldn't get gasoline to hit the German western wall and plunge into Germany. I'll leave you with this Sarge and others who might be tired of reading my missive. Paton then had to divert his forces north into Belgium when Monty and Bradley got spoofed with the sudden German attack in the Bulge on Dec. 16. Patton saved all their asses. It is very possible the war was extended for another four of five months because of these blunders by Ike. We could have taken Berlin and stopped the Russians before they got very far in Germany. Thank you for reading.

Robert Mitchum got a new cigar and told the solider to drive him up the hill. His forces landed at Omaha Beach where the ridges up the incline was a bastard to navigate. They made it up with a lot of dead and wounded left behind.

Keeping Patton in Britain was a major part of the deception plan. Also, his popularity at home dropped due to the 2 slapping incidents. (There was 2, even though the movie had one) But the Germans couldn't imagine an invasion without him and having him by the British port closest to Calaise was a very convincing deception.
By the way, I read Patton's diaries and after the war ended before he died he made some very anti-Semitic posts.

Patton was no angel Sarge and it doesn't surprise me if he made some anti-Semetic comments. There was a lot of that going on in the US Army because there were a lot of officersfrom the Hookworm Belt (the South) and we know how they thought back then, much different from the South of today. Still deception or not, we wasted two months screwingaround in Normandy and in my opinion Patton would have sliced through the German lines like butter on bread.

The Germans identified American Armies by their number, ex, 1st, 5th, 7th and 9th. They did not identify Patton's Army as the 3rd. They called it Army Group Patton. He was our best combat general in WWII.

He never made those comments during the war. He even wrote about meeting with Jewish chaplains. But after the war (the European war, I mean, because we were still fighting the Japs) he made a lot of really bad remarks about the Holocaust survivors, like they were ungrateful babies about how we saved them. Interesting book. I read a lot of WW-2 diaries by generals such as Rommell's and James Gavin to name two.

YOU'RE A MAN AFTER MY OWN HEART SARGE. I TAUGHT HIGH SCHOL HISTORY FOR 35 YEARS ANDSTILL SOMETIMES TRY TO ACT LIKE I'M IN THE CLASSROOM AGAIN. SO GOOD TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE A HISTORY BUFF.

Might you have been reading "War As I Knew It" by Patton. I recall reading some remarks he made about how inept and slovenly those recently liberated Jews looked and acted. But, hell, what did he expect them to look like after being beaten up, worked to death and nearly starved for years. Well, we all seem to have feet of clay from time to time.
