COVID-19 Death Rate is Still 2.3% in the US

Posted by Mitch45 on Thu Apr 2 15:10:39 2020

According to numbers I just saw, there are 234,462 diagnosed cases of COVID-19 in the US, and 5,607 fatalities.

That is a 2.3% fatality rate. Still tragically high but the rate itself hasn’t seemed to have changed for some time. Yes, as more people are infected more will die but I find it encouraging that the fatality rate has held steady.

Actually, that's not good news. I am not an expert on statistics but it seems that if we are testing more and identifying more cases but the death rate remains consistent then the actual number dying is going up.

237,063 with 10,324 recovered officially.

According to another top study, we're looking at a 1-2% death rate anyway.
But I'm guessing if you are still being so binary about it, you haven't been symptomatic.

Even if the death rate were 0, I had a cough like that once, you don't want it. The American Media failed you.

Though recovering in the hospital is a fate much preferable to death, with a ~20% hospitalization rate I see it as a 1 in 5 chance of going through something hellish.

More die, but more less serious infections get discovered with more testing. So it roughly cancels out.

The trouble is, of course, that 2% of 330 million is 6.6 million, which is an absolutely terrible number. So until we can get massive testing in place so that uninfected and recovered people go to work and sick people stay home, our economy is in terrible shape. And people continue to die and get permanently disabled.

There is also lag time from date of detection to death.

In a few cases, death occurs before detection.

2.3 percent is 2.3 fatalities out of every 100 infections.

If there were only 100 infections, that number sounds bad, but when the higher numbers of infected come in, the 2.3 number gets smaller. By the time you get to 10,000 infected, the number of fatalities is "only" 230 but the number of survivors is 9,770.

In terms of pure nunbers, yes. But then again, the number of survivors goes up too, and at a much faster pace. That's how percentages work.

If had 100 infected people, 2.3 of them would die and 97.7 would live.

If you had 1000 infected people, 23 would die and 977 would live.

If you had 10000 infected people, 230 would die and 9,700 would live.

As a lifelong asthma sufferer, I have had really bad cases of bronchitis where my lungs feel like they are filled with sand. When I was a kid, when I was sick it was sometimes so hard to draw a breath that the skin over my throat would contract and and sink into my neck. I could not breathe in any position but sitting up and even then it was hard.

I really wonder how much worse a COVID-19 infection is.

It sounds bad no matter how many infections there are.

Without social distancing, a vaccine, or an elaborate program of repeated testing to identify the infected and then isolate them from the uninfected, the US will have 300 million infections, which is "only" 6.9 million deaths.

As a lifelong asthma sufferer

You MUST take isolation incredibly seriously until there is a vaccine.

Otherwise you are very likely to be one of those deaths that is casually dismissed as "he was younger than the typical age but he had an existing condition."

I would suggest you wear a mask whenever you go out, in addition to social distancing. It won't save you if you do something dumb or have bad luck, but it improves your odds.

Interesting average, it seems like it's 3-4 weeks I thought, unless that's counted from the moment of lockdown.

I used to be afraid of the prick test that I mysteriously had once as a kid for I don't know why, but I still remember it.

The test you're talking about is so ugh, that I just will never go outside again. I'll wait for the painful prick test. That they can do as i'm passed out on the floor.

clarification, finger prick when they start testing for antigens. Although this country will probably be last to do it.
