Coronavirus etiquette
Posted by Easy on Wed Mar 25 19:24:58 2020 I went to pickup takeaway yesterday at Sweetgreen and due to the pandemic they only take app orders. There is no more ordering inside at the counter. Then you're supposed to arrive precisely when they tell you to pickup your order. So I arrive right at 6 pm. There are signs all over the door stating that only one person can enter at a time. I walk in and they have a table barricade so that a max of 3 people could possibly fit. 30 seconds later an uber eats driver parks in the red zone and then walks through the door and stands right next to me. Hello?!? Unbelievable! Finally, when did we stop saying "takeout" and "to go" and start saying takeaway? The whole world is upside down.

In general, anyone I have come across inside a store keeps their distance. Though in the grocery store a few people stand in the middle of the aisle thinking, making it impossible to quickly pass by. And when walking down the street, almost every oncoming person swerves to the right so we have the maximum separation as we meet.

I was in Whole Foods two days ago and we had to wait outside to enter. They have the pavement marked at 6 foot intervals for social spacing. The people on either side of me were goood but there were a few idiots. Inside the store though, I'm walking down the supplements aisle and a young woman is standing to one side looking for whatever she's looking for. He boyfriend is on the far opposite side of the aisle so I go to walk between them. Right as I approach he steps directly in my path and stands in the middle of the aisle. I walked around, but I definitely noticed.

Were people walking around? Yes Was it normal levels? No. Maybe 1/4 Did they observe social distancing on the sidewalk? Not at all. Plenty walked right down the middle of the sidewalk. A donut shop was open and we kept plenty of distance to the people in front of us. Maybe 3 meters since it was pretty empty. Somebody came in and stood right behind us while we were ordering. Unbelievable. On the way home CVS was busy. We had to wait for people to leave before security let us in. Hard to keep social distancing inside with the small aisles but shoppers could have done much better. They have plastic barriers hanging from the ceiling to protect cashiers and pharmacy workers. All in all LA residents that are out do not appear to be as concerned as NYers. Many are wearing masks though.

But most are pretty good about it. And the sidewalks here are VERY empty. On a typical 750 foot crosstown block, I may meet 2 people where we can pass each other with 6 feet of width, and one person where I might cross the street or go out into the street because the sidewalk happens to be too narrow just there.

People here just don't get it. Oh well. Hopefully we won't pay for it. Shared an elevator on the way down with one other person. So far my rule of thumb is that if more than two others get on, I get off. But even with just one person we're only 3-4 feet apart and in an enclosed space. What is the proper etiquette?

I saw a facebook posting about people going to lowes in large groups. Whole families. No one spacing. No nothing still. I think Trump and the CDC has become co-governors of New York, because they're not giving us the timeline that makes sense for all of unprepared America. I also think supermarkets need to either close to the public and do dropoff and delivery people only, or actulaly have guards at the door for maximum occupancy.

Certainly not lockdown. We have an older doh and we take her out three times per day so we probably go out four times per day max. Mostly for 5-10 minutes at a time, but we also go to the grocery, drugstore and takeaway. Our grocery stores and drug stores do have security guards and they are limiting the number of people inside. We have to line up on the sidewalk.

Just don't try to rush or you'll get wiped out. And downstairs goes way faster.
