Um, the "cure" for a virus is a vaccine.

How do you think polio, measles, chicken pox, etc. have been mostly "cured?"

Then there's JayzeeBMT who thinks I should be worried about a flu instead, or AIM who goes on about facemasks.

Most of these little dicks don't know what's going on in China. And the little pricks have never seen the medicine aisle at the wal-mart obviously.

I suppose that's true. A cure is when you get the disease and the medical folks go abracadabra, and you're all better. Like antibiotics for a bacterial disease.

Personally, I prefer not getting the disease in the first place, as opposed to getting it and being cured.

Yes, I go on about face masks, because if you are concerned about catching COVID-19, a face mask is good prevention. The virus is spread in little drops of liquid, and what better way of not inhaling a little drop of liquid from someone else than using a face mask?

And yet you won't answer that simple question of whether you're using one or not. Why?

Part of the reason it's expensive is because it's hard to synthesize and thus rare.

This is one of those edge cases where socialized medicine would show a flaw: Under socialized medicine, the well connected will get access first, with little to no chance for a commoner to get it.

In a capitalist system, those who can afford it will get access first. While at first glance this means "It's only for the rich how is this better?!", consider crowdfunding. A commoner who makes a good case can get millions of people to contribute towards their getting the rare life-saving medicine. There's no single politician or bureaucrat denying your application for the medicine; if you convince enough people to give you enough green, you can be saved.

The difference isn't that big. A rich person who gets sick mostly likely just has to go to their doctor. A poor person who gets sick will somehow have to raise the money (while they're sick), then they have to find a doctor who can provide the treatment. All this takes time and effort, and can easily reach the point where the treatment will make no difference, one way or the other.

Crowdfunding only works for a tiny number of people.

If a course of medicine costs $1,000 to $10,000 and hundreds of thousands of people need it, the middle class will get it and the poor won't.

Here we go, I found this

The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement (VHEMT[A]) is an environmental movement that calls for all people to abstain from reproduction to cause the gradual voluntary extinction of humankind. VHEMT supports human extinction primarily because, in the group's view, it would prevent environmental degradation. The group states that a decrease in the human population would prevent a significant amount of human-caused suffering. The extinctions of non-human species and the scarcity of resources required by humans are frequently cited by the group as evidence of the harm caused by human overpopulation.

VHEMT was founded in 1991 by Les U. Knight, an American activist who became involved in the environmental movement in the 1970s and thereafter concluded that human extinction was the best solution to the problems facing the Earth's biosphere and humanity. Knight publishes the group's newsletter and serves as its spokesman. Although the group is promoted by a website and represented at some environmental events, it relies heavily on coverage from outside media to spread its message. Many commentators view its platform as unacceptably extreme, though other writers have applauded VHEMT's perspective. In response to VHEMT, some journalists and academics have argued that humans can develop sustainable lifestyles or can reduce their population to sustainable levels. Others maintain that, whatever the merits of the idea, the human reproductive drive will prevent humankind from ever voluntarily seeking extinction

I agree. But in a socialist system, the well connected along with an arbitrarily random selection of middle class will get it and the poor still won't. Getting treatment shouldn't be like winning the lottery, the well prepared (people who were frugal, drove crappy cars, lived with roommates) and saved up for emergencies should certainly be able to cash in on that preparedness to save their own life.

This assumes scarcity of resources. The advantage of capitalism is that it’s the fairest way to allocate scarce resources. I think a lot of these resources are artificially scarce.

So do I, which is pretty much what we have. People do have to be mindful about how much they pull the lever to one side or the other. A criticism I have about Trump is he is removing regulations at a record pace, and we won't know what kind of effect this will have for a few years. I also have criticism for self-avowed socialists who want to make sweeping reforms of whole business sectors or nationalize currently private systems outright.

They're getting traction because moderates/centrists aren't making progress on key issues, such as income inequality and the environment. Those areas are either staying still or getting worse over time. If the moderates/centrists won't do squat, people are going to look to the extremists for a different way of getting it done.

Those areas are either staying still or getting worse over time. If the moderates/centrists won't do squat, people are going to look to the extremists for a different way of getting it done.

Moderates/centrists correctly determined that those things aren't actually key issues that need sweeping reform. Income inequality is meaningless in two regards:
1 - the increased minimum wage (yay lefist policies!) combined with the worker supply constraint caused by reduced immigration (yay right-wing policies!) have combined their powers to result in the lowest wage earners getting substantially more benefit from the current economy than the higher ones. The gap is slowly narrowing without direct intervention. No politician is talking about this because both sides' policies are combining to make it happen.
2 - The top 1% pay 39% of the taxes while only receiving 20% of the income [CNBC], best not to piss them off.

The only thing that needed to be done w/r/t the environment is to not roll back existing regulations, and make minor tweaks to improve things over time... Trump has decided to fail at this.
Climate alarmists like Greta Thumberg are demanding we shut off all carbon emissions right now, which will kill millions of people, hand the economy over to China, India, and Russia (who sign climate accords fully intending to disregard them), and only reduce global climate emissions by 8%.

So regarding climate, progressives are being ignored because they're idiots.

It is good to copy good ideas. A great line from a Prime Minister of Singapore was "there's no problem [Singapore] is facing that another country hasn't already faced. Find their solution and copy it."

I'm just cynical and expect that we'll implement those ideas terribly, and we'll probably be better off 'evolving' something rather than transplanting something from an incompatible donor.

For example I like the types of nationalized health care found in Japan and Singapore. However I fear if we try to implement it, we're more likely to get USSR and Venezuela quality rather than Asian quality.

Look at what happens when we try to copy European style high speed rail. Billions upon billions spent and the closest things we currently have are a slight evolution of the PRR [success], Euro-style trainsets transplanted to the Pacific Northwest (not living up to their potential at all), and a private-sector derived option built to fit the realities of US regulatory structure [Brightline, success].
