Yes, except if you are right there paying attention you probably notice the change in the sound as the tank gets nearly full.

That’s the thing, I don’t pay attention to that sound and I wouldn’t be able to recognize it.

That's amusing, but not only do I have water and electricity, I have a natural gas line.

Over 100 years ago, the 1% had both, a gas line and an electric line with two sets of lights. When the power plant would shut down Sundays for maintenance, they lit the gas lights.

Someone had to have thought of a better way for their horseless carriage.

The energy density of gasoline and heating oil is way higher than that of natural gas. To have natural gas delivered in a truck is quite expensive. To have heating oil delivered isn't that costly.

Meanwhile, cars are naturally mobile. So it's easier, safer, and cheaper to drive to the gas station than to have your own (possibly explosive) gasoline tank at home.

I reckon. But considering we had people with Champaign flowing in their taps at home, I'm still surprised that no one had a private tap somewhere or some utopian village with gas faucets. I probably just haven't found the story yet.

Good point. There all non union working at or not much more than minimum wage. They might get a uniform allowence & not much else other than an occasional tip or a cash customer driving off w/o their change. I know. Its a real shit job. I've done it way back when they used to give out Plaid Stamp at my station at Coney Isl.Ave & 18th Ave, Midwood Brooklyn.

Thats the way its supposed to happen. On those rare occasions, it dosen't. Those nozzles are pressure sensitive, meaning that the gas has to be flowing out of the pump at a certain pressure or the automatic shut-off feature might now work.
The two most likely scenerios where this could happen is at a busy station, all of one particular grade is being pumped at the same time into several cars or if the station tanks are running low, slowing down the pressure.
I've seen that happen where a motorist is checking under the hood while the gas is pumping. The nozzle didn't shut off & the gasoline went flowing down the side of his fender & into the street. Luckly his car & the neighborhood didn't blow up.

Once in my life I was using a self service pump that didn't shut off. It was definitely defective.

Do you remember if it was a location you regularly used, or was it a one-time visit?
