Self service was earlier than pay at the pump. You just had to pay the attendant.

I don't see it being safer unless they stay by your car. Usually they don't. Then when it stops ya gotta wait for them to come back.

So it's not safer and it's a time waster & if they charge extra, it becomes a money waster too.

Eh, a few other reasons for full-serve:
1 - The gas pump is the dirtiest thing you'll touch all day
2 - It's cold up here, I like being able to sit in the car
3 - I'm never in enough of a rush when I need gas that the extra 2-3 minutes actually matters.

When Shop-Rite first opened up here, the gas stations attached to it were full serve and had prices exactly in line with all the other gas stations nearby; it didn't even cost more.

You seem to want to come up with any excuse for government to mandate full service. Interesting.

When there are delays at full service stations, they are not two to three minutes. They are often quite a bit longer, particularly due to attendants having to juggle multiple pumps and deal with multiple transactions including cash.

If we can't get NY to let us use the trigger lock / hold-open clip, the next best thing would be full serve.

I never knew that about NY. I worked up in Albany , NY for 2 winters and 2 summers in the early 60's and I don't remember that. In Penna. , we have trigger lock/hold open clips.

Sometimes you'll find a gas station has replaced one of their handles and "forgotten" to remove the clip, but yeah, it sucks. People then do things like shove the gas cap into the gap, and because it's not designed to deal with a gas cap holding the trigger down, gas spills all over the place. The very safety reason the clips were removed for is thus more likely to happen because they're not there.

I drive to NJ three weeks a month and always fill up at the first Sunoco station going down (immediately after crossing into NJ on 17) or the last BP station on the way out. If the price difference is large enough I'll use the U-turn to get to that Sunoco station and then back on the road - it's arguably the easiest southbound station to reach from / get back to the northbound side on all of 17.

Only with the clip because it's designed to easily allow the trigger to release. If you shoved a gas cap in, it will happily keep pumping.
